Around and Around and Around Vika Goes...

Where she stops, only she knows.

The new season has barely begun, and Vika is already making all sorts of new friends.

Monks...

And sponges...

And ninja turtles...

Oh, my!

Monks, and sponges and ninja turtles! Oh, my!
Monks, and sponges and ninja turtles! Oh, my!
Monks, and sponges and ninja turtles! Oh, my!

All for now.

I love the elephant head!

I wish nika will have different themes and colors for the players like last year AO. Since then all of them wear the same color tones.

I agree. You'd think they'd want to differentiate the players a little bit, rather than have them seem a nameless, faceless horde of racket-wielding beings all dressed in the same "uniform."

Well, that is, unless that sort of IS the frame of mind, of course. Since, you know, the one thing everyone will notice about the monotonous clothing is that it all has the Nike logo. :\

Sigh.

was this konjuh's debut on the women's tour? that's good. hope that she lights a fire under her older and similarly-aged contemporaries. Game needs some new blood.

I see that Hurricane is doing well too.

Winds of change...

Yeah, it was. Quite an introduction for Konjuh. :)

There was a kneel. There was a diamond. And there was a sweet Caroline. Rory popped the question in Sydney and she said yes. The gossip papers are going mad.

Happy new year to all backspin followers from a happy Dane :)

Well, I guess it's a good thing she didn't hurt her LEFT shoulder this week then! ;)

I've seen images for quite a few other players for the AO, but not Vika. On the whole, though, it'll have to be an improvement over what she wore in NYC, right? Even though I know the shorts won't be back. :(

Vania King's first top 10 win?

Thu Jan 02, 03:32:00 PM EST

Not her first, but her best. She defeated Bartoli (#10) in Seoul in 2011. Errani, of course, is currently ranked higher.

Of course, she's since lost to Zahlavova-Strycova, so... :(

Vika took 10 MPS to win QF. That must be a record ? I didn't watch it, would have been utterly speechless.

Zheng lost to Zahlavova...Vania withdrew against Peng...

Yeah, saw that King/Peng "result"... which sort of confused me since I swear the score site had BZS over King when I collected all the scores. Maybe it was just a temporary glitch. Still, bad end for her week.

Whew! Vika nearly down set and break vs. JJ, then struggled a bit to put her away at end of 3rd. Felt a little (too) familiar.

i haven't seen the replay yet, but JJ has pretty much gained back her movement and style play and can really play with anyone on the tour now. at any time of the day, she can beat anyone.

Just seen another excellent match. I know a lot of Rena fans will say that it was a horrible match - and in that I totally disagree. This match was excellent seen from a spectators point of view. Yes it was a match of doublefaultitis and yes we don't expect that from such top players BUT even they are human. In between it was tennis on a very high level and I - as a no special fan of either player - enjoyed second set of brilliant tennis ver much. Sometimes you have to look at intensity and commitment in a match and not always look at the poor stats - stats were poor but play was really great

Just to give you a heads up - if it happens tomorrow/tonight (depending on your time zone), I'm expecting you to know the last the Williams sisters each won a title on the same week. (It is also likely that Federer and Nadal will win a title the same week, which is other oddity.)

Ha! All right, Will. I'm now armed with the info, just in case. It last happened in... no, I'll just wait. ;)

It's been quite a while, though.

I WILL say the Federer/Nadal occasion, though. It's previously happened twice, in 2005 and in 2008, with the latter coming during the grass season with a Federer title in Halle, while Nadal won in London.

Ivanovic d. V.Williams 2-6/7-5/6-4

Well, so much for "first time since..."

But, for the record, the last -- and still only -- time that both Venus and Serena won tour singles titles in the same week was 1999, when Venus won in Oklahoma City (def. Coetzer) and Serena (def. Mauresmo) won the Paris indoors. That was a teenaged Serena's very first WTA singles title, by the way.

So Ivanovic spoils the party. Thanks for looking up the info. My guess would have been late-90s when they were in their teens, especially they have played the tour so little.
