Her maiden Wimbledon semifinal completes Swiatek's "Career Semifinal Slam," as she's now reached the final four at all four majors. At the moment (i.e. not counting the likes of Venus), she's one of only four active women (and one of those is Karolina Pliskova, who last played at the '24 U.S. Open) who've managed the feat, along with Aryna Sabalenka and Victoria Azarenka. Watching the intent with which Swiatek has played at this Wimbledon, it's a legitimate question whether at the moment she's actually playing with more confidence on her "worst" surface than she played throughout the clay court spring on what has traditionally been her best. There's been no panic-tinged moments, no blowout losss, no significant blow-ups at her coaching box and very little questions about her "worst" season, which has still managed to produce three major SF runs even while not including a singles title for more than a calendar year. One more win and the "Why Not Me?" chapter of "Świątek's Śummer Śwoltice" may truly kick in at the one major she's discounted herself in until, maybe, this month, if not this week. Those tears at the Bad Homburg trophy ceremony can be remember through a somewhat different lens now, less a sign of sadness over her title drought continuing, and maybe more of an indication that she was just *beginning* to believe that grass might not be as much of a personal antagonist as she thought. Since that moment, Iga has surely settled into something of a groove to this point, playing well and not stressing, while also carrying on a two-pronged off-court storyline that has alternately focused on her strawberry-related cuisine of choice or her ongoing role as this Wimbledon's most renowned "Towel Thief" as she's managed to stuff as many of the prized collector's edition items into her bags as possible after every match. Both stories are funny, and a little bit stupid, but they may have also helped to play a role in keeping her mood and the pressure light. And if it's working this well... hey, make off with as many towels as possible. They'll make more.
Iga Swiatek asked the ball kid to go and grab her more towels after reaching her first Wimbledon semifinal.

...in the second QF, contested essentially simultaneously with the first until a decent bit into its 2nd set, #7 Mirra Andreeva and Belinda Bencic played a nip-and-tuck affair in which breaks of serve were hard to come by. Through the first twenty games of the match, neither could break the other. In fact, the opening ten games produced zero BP opportunities. Finally, at 5-5 in the 1st, Andreeva managed to carve out a pair, but Bencic held to take a 6-5 lead. After Andreeva forced a TB, Bencic went up 3-1, then closed out the breaker with a 7-3 win. The all-holds-all-the-time affair continued through the first eight games of the 2nd set before the two exchanged breaks, Bencic edging ahead and then the 18-year old getting back even at 5-5 after the Swiss veteran had served for the match and gotten within two points (at 30/30) of victory. At about the time she was close to winning the match, Bencic starting grimacing and limping, but didn't take an MTO to address the situation. She said afterward that she thinks she cracked a toe nail. The calculated risk of allowing herself to perhaps not be 100% in her movement at such an important moment suddenly looked questionable, as Andreeva backed up the break with a hold for 6-5. But the Hordette's spate of errors in the closing games of the set prevented her from pulling away and forcing a 3rd. Bencic held to get to another TB, where she took a 4-1 lead. An Andreeva DF gave Bencic a MP at 6-2, and the Swiss put away the 7-6(3)/7-6(2) win with a smash at the net to reach her maiden Wimbledon SF (second at a major, w/ '19 U.S.).

Belinda Bencic celebrates reaching the Wimbledon semi-final. pic.twitter.com/GKR6oVbhjv
Nine months after returning from a 13-month absence from tennis while having her first child, Bencic is now the second Swiss woman to reach the SF at SW19, along with two-timer Martina Hingis (1997-98). With her WTA standing outside the Top 1200 when she re-entered the rankings in November, Bencic opened 2025 at #489. With an AO Round of 16, Abu Dhabi title, RG absence (w/ an arm injury) and now her first major semifinal in nearly six years, she's assured of returning to the Top 20 at the conclusion of this Wimbledon. The day's results mean one of two former Wimbledon juniors champs (Bencic '13 or Swiatek '18) will reach their first women's final at SW19. ...in the opening round of wheelchair doubles, Ksenia Chasteau was at it again. Yesterday, the 19-year old Pastry upset #2 seed Aniek Van Koot in singles, and today she joined with Angelica Bernal to upend the top-seeded doubles duo of Manami Tanaka & Zhu Zhenzhen. Elsewhere, defending WD champs Yui Kamiji & Kgothatso Montjane lost to #2-seeded Li Xiaohui & Wang Ziying, the reigning AO winners. ...the junior quarterfinals are set, and they consist of players from seven different nations. The only nation with multiple players? The host Brits. #3 Lilli Tagger (AUT) defeated GBR wild card Ruby Cooling (until next time...), staying alive to become the first to sweep the RG/WI junior titles in a season since Belinda Bencic in 2013 (who'd been the first since Amelie Mauresmo in 1996). #5-seeded Bannerette Julieta Pareja is one round closer to becoming the first to sweep the Roehampton and SW19 crowns since 2022, defeating her Roehampton final foe, Bulgarian Elizara Yaneva, 6-2/6-2. Yaneva led Paraja by a set and break in last week's final. The '22 sweep was by another U.S. player, Liv Hovde, who is to date the only to pull it off this decade after it happened seven times during the 2010s. #1 Emerson Jones will continue her quest to win a junior major crown, after the Aussie came up short in both the AO and Wimbledon finals last season. #2 Hannah Klugman and Mimi Xu are the remaining Brits, as the home contingent have placed two girls in the QF for the second time in three years, after Mika Stojsavljevic and Ranah Akua Stoiber did it in 2023. The next step has proven more difficult, though, as the Wimbledon girls' semis have contained two GBR players just *once* since the junior competition moved from a round robin format (where group winners moved directly into the final) in 1949, when Anne Keothavong and the late Elena Baltacha reached the final four in 2001.

3 Comments:
In press today, Iga talked about how the junior tournament starts when the grass is already worn, so it plays more like clay, and she found it very different to play her 1R main-draw match the following year on the fresh grass.
I thought it was a useful perspective as to why winning the juniors hasn't automatically translated to success for her!
Mirra Andreeva is very positive as a coach, but not afraid to provide direct instructions--I like it! She and Conchita are hilarious, and hilarity tends to be rare at Wimbledon. More, please.
Wozniacki won the junior Wimbledon in 2006.
Swiatek beat Belinda in the 4th round at Wimbledon in 2023. Swiatek is the favorite for their upcoming SF match.
Sabalenka & Anisimova have never meet each other on grass before. I think Anisimova has a shot here.
