WTA 2002 Yearbook
Eleven months ago (*), I listed the "10 Most Intriguing Questions" about the then-upcoming 2002 WTA season. As the season has come to a close, it's time for a status report:
10.WILL 2002's #1 PLAYER ACTUALLY WIN A GRAND SLAM?
*************************************
WHAT I SAID THEN: "The anomalies that occurred in 2000 & 2001 won't be repeated in 2002, as the tweaks in the ranking system will likely push the player with the best slam results to #1."
VERDICT: Hit
...Martina Hingis didn't win a slam in '00, and Lindsay Davenport didn't even reach a slam final in '01. This year, Serena made things elementary by taking all three remaining slams after missing Oz due to injury.
9.WILL AMELIE MAURESMO FINALLY HAVE A GRAND SLAM TO BE PROUD OF?
**************************************
WHAT I SAID THEN: "Mauresmo will always be perceived as a threat going into most slams, but that talk always comes equipped with a qualifying rider that goes something like, 'if she can ever get it together and win a big match.' The choker label will continue to trail behind her like a homesick puppy, and she won't be able to shake it in 2002."
VERDICT: Miss
...Mauresmo, with a new coach who brought out the best in her, advanced to both the Wimbledon & US Open SF and won the Tier I in Montreal for her biggest title to date.
8.Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin & Jelena Dokic all made the Top 10 for the first time in 2001, so who'll be the next group of teens to do the same in 2002?
**************************************
WHAT I SAID THEN: "Lina Krasnoroutskaya will challenge for a Top 10 spot, with Daja Bedanova and Daniela Hantuchova not far behind."
VERDICT: Mixed
...Injuries nearly ended Lina K.'s career as she dropped from #34 to #175, but she did close her season with her first SF since 1999. Bedanova finished #37. Hantuchova, though, climbed from #38 to #8 and won the Tier I Indian Wells crown.
7.Will Jelena Dokic's serve improve enough for her to fulfill the promise she showed in rising to #8 and winning two Tier I's in 2001?
*************************************
WHAT I SAID THEN: "Dokic's serve will improve significantly and she'll climb over the Waffles in the rankings en route to her first grand slam singles final."
VERDICT: Miss
...Dokic started her season well with a stronger serve powering her to a win over Monica Seles in Paris, but a leg injury suffered in that match caused her problems for months. She never really regained her early-year service form. At this point, only better coaching will get #9 Dokic to the next level -- and past #4 Clijsters & #5 Henin.
6.Will either of the Belgian Waffles win a slam title in 2002?
**************************************
WHAT I SAID THEN: "Clijsters will be the first Waffle to win a slam in '02."
VERDICT: Miss, but...
...Clijsters had a poor slam season, but got healthy and went on an 18-match tear to end the year by claiming three straight titles, including "the 5th slam" Tour Championship final. She might be Serena's chief competition in Oz in January.
5.Who will stage a Capriati-esque comeback and maybe win a surprise grand slam crown?
**************************************
WHAT I SAID THEN: "Monica Seles will advance to her first slam final since 1998, but won't win it. Iva Majoli will finish in the Top 20."
VERDICT: Miss, but...
...Seles didn't make that final slam challenge (but she did beat Venus in Oz); Majoli ended at #32, but won her first WTA title since the 1997 Roland Garros with the Tier I win in Charleston.
4.Will the Williams sisters live up to their promise to play full schedules in 2002?
**************************************
WHAT I SAID THEN: "Neither will play full schedules, but both will still end up in the Top 5. Venus will be #1, with two grand slam titles."
MISS: Miss
...Venus went from 11 to 16 events, while Serena went from 10 to 13. That's probably as full as either's slate will get. Of course, Serena was an easy #1 with three slam titles, all over #2 Venus in the final.
3.Will Martina Hingis break through what has become a glass ceiling and dominate the women's tour again?
*************************************
WHAT I SAID THEN: "Hingis will never dominate again, but she won't go away either."
VERDICT: Hit...for now
...Hingis made the Oz final and blew three MPs to keep her 3-year slam-less streak alive. For the second straight year, her season ended with injury concerns (this time after an abbreviated comeback following a long absence), making one wonder if she might just walk away for good if she has another similar season in 2003.
2.What will the year-after be like for Jennifer Capriati?
**************************************
WHAT I SAID THEN: "Capriati will hold herself together, but she won't be as successful in 2002 when she can't defend her Oz/RG titles and her ranking slips. She'll finish the year in the Top 10 and maybe even win another slam, but she won't come close to replicating her dream 2001 season."
VERDICT: Hit
...Capriati defended her Oz title after a miracle come-from-behind win over Hingis, but she never won another title all season. She only fell from #2 to #3, but the gulf between her and the Williams sisters is huge.
1.Will the injury-marred season that caused her Top 10 ranking to plummet to #74 finally awaken Anna Kournikova's athletic desire to become a champion?
**************************************
WHAT I SAID THEN: "Kournikova won't be the Capriati of '02 but, being Anna, her comeback will get even more headines than the American's as long as injuries don't take her out again. She'll fight her way back... starting with getting her first singles title before Oz. Come October, she still won't be the top Russian-born player in the WTA rankings, but she'll be within spitting distance of the Top 10 again.
VERDICT: Mixed
...Her comeback attempt made headlines, of course. She had her ups and down, making the Auckland SF before Oz, going 0-4 in grand slams, hitting her stride with a great pre-US Open run, but seeing it come to a screeching halt once she blew 2 MPs against Dokic in the San Diego SF. Her rollercoaster went up again with an appearance in the Shanghai final in September (she lost, but it was her best result since her 2000 Moscow RU), then went down with another season-ending injury three weeks later. Her ranking rose from #74 to #35 (#11 Anastasia Myskina was the top Russian), but her won/lost record hovered around .500 all season. The glimpses of desire she showed in 2002 weren't nearly enough to not have to question all over again Kournikova's ability to return to a higher level in 2003.

Not bad, but not great. Maybe I'll do better in 2003. I'll be back next month to talk about 2003's "Most Intriguing WTA Questions."

GETS MOST OUT OF TALENT: Anna Smashnova
GETS THE LEAST: Elena Dementieva
IS STILL LEARNING TO USE HER TALENT: Alexandra Stevenson
>>>MOMENTS
BIGGEST SLAM STORY, ON COURT: Serena sets up possible "Serena Slam" in Melbourne
BIGGEST SLAM STORY, OFF COURT: Anna Kournikova goes 0-4 in grand slams
(yeah, I know that's ON court... but you know everything she does is usually an off court story no matter where it happens)
THE START: Rome Final - Serena def. Henin for her first clay court crown... and didn't look back until she'd won three straight grand slam titles
MOST SIGNIFICANT WIN FOR THE FUTURE:
Hantuchova def. Martina Hingis in Indian Wells final for her first title
MOST ENTERTAINING TWO SETS: San Diego SF - Kournikova leads Dokic 7-6,6-6 and holds two match points before Dokic blazes back to win the tie-break and take the 3rd set 6-0. Neither was ever really the same for the remainder of their seasons.
BEST/WORST MATCH FOR WOMEN'S TENNIS:
Martina Navratilova, at 45 and having not played a singles match since 1994, defeats Top 25 player Tatiana Panova in Eastbourne 1r. Did it say more about Navratilova's residual greatness, or give ammunition to the detractors who bemoan the lack of TRUE depth on the WTA Tour?
BIGGEST CHOKES:
1.Hingis blows 4 MPs vs. Capriati in Oz final, the biggest collapse in grand slam final history.
-------------------------------------
2.New Haven QF - Hingis leads Myskina 7-6,4-1 and has a BP for 5-1...then doesn't win another game in the match.
-------------------------------------
3.WTA Chsp.1r - Davenport fails to convert 7 MPs against Seles, losing despite leading the 2nd set TB 6-2.
-------------------------------------
4.Amelia Island Final - Justine Henin leads Venus 6-4,4-0, but loses.
BIGGEST NEAR-CHOKE:
US Open 3r - Seles leads Yoon-Jeong Cho 6-1,5-1... yet has to win a 3rd set to advance.
ODDITY: Iva Majoli meets Patty Schnyder in the Charleston Final, the first time two unseeded players have ever met in a Tier I final. Majoli, at #58, becomes lowest-ranked player to win a Tier I.
WORST LOSS AT A BIG EVENT:
1.US Open 1r - #1102 Bea Bielik def. #27 Tamarine Tanasugarn
-------------------------------------
2.Roland Garros 1r - #179 Aniko Kapros def. Justine Henin
-------------------------------------
3.Charleston 3r - #109 Stephanie Foretz def. Monica Seles
BIGGEST FEUD:
1.Jennifer Capriati vs. Billie Jean King...to practice with your coach or to not practice with your coach, that is the Fed Cup question.
-------------------------------------
2.Jelena Dokic vs. Eastbourne organizers... #1 seed Dokic, a week after winning in Birmingham, is shoved off to a side court, while "some ridiculous match" between Navratilova and Hantuchova is scheduled for the main court. Dokic lost her opening match to Daja Bedanova.
-------------------------------------
3.Anna Kournikova vs. BBC...when is an interview not an interview?
>>>AWARDS
BEST COMEBACK, LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT:
Corina Morariu... cancer survivor
BEST COMEBACK, WHAT'S A LIFETIME IN TENNIS?: Martina Navratilova. At 45, become oldest champion ever with doubles title, and oldest to ever win a singles match, too.
BEST QUIET COMEBACKS: Maggie Maleeva & Patty Schnyder... both finished in the Top 15 and walked away with surprise Tier I titles in the fall.
BIGGEST DISAPPEARING ACT: Mary Pierce... she might be gone for good, this time.
BIGGEST DISAPPEARING ACT II: Iva Majoli, just like after her 1997 RG title, once again turned into the Invisible Girl after her Charleston title. If her schedule stays true to form, she'll win her next tournament in 2007.
MISSED MOST: Martina Hingis... do you miss the days when was dogged by detractors who said she didn't deserve to be #1? Now, it's not even an issue.
NOT MISSED AS MUCH ANY LONGER, BUT SURELY UNDERAPPRECIATED: Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, retired (but probably coming to a doubles match near you before 2003 is over).
LATE CAREER SURGE: Jill Craybas, who won her first career title at age 28.
LATE-BLOOMER: Anna Smashnova, 6 career titles -- 4 of them in 2002 at 26.
BEST DRESSED: Serena Williams
WORST DRESSED: Serena Williams
>>>BEST OF THE REST
SOAP OPERA: As Jelena's (Dokic) World (Twists and) Turns... titles, shocking losses, Damir, Bernoldi, crying fits, "semi-tanks," fierce comebacks, disarming smiles, odd political stands, a no-show in Australia, etc.
MOST ENCOURAGING: Anna Kournikova, the early summer version
LEAST ENCOURAGING: Anna Kournikova, the late summer version
MOST LIKELY TO LOSE AT A BIG MOMENT, 2001 EDITION: Amelie Mauresmo, who now abdicates the thrown after two grand slam SF and a Tier I title
MOST LIKELY TO LOSE AT A BIG MOMENT, 2002 EDITION: Elena Dementieva, the queen of losing to lesser-ranked players (0-3 vs. Angelika Roesch?) despite winning the 1st set
BEST NAMES IN THE TOP 200: Dally Randriantefy (#193), Flavia Penneta (#94), Milagros Seguera (#116)
MOST MISPRONOUNCED, 2002: Justine Henin
MOST MISPRONOUNCED, 2003:
Justine Henin-Hardenne
FAMOUS COUPLES: Agassi/Graf, Clijsters/Hewitt, Dokic/Bernoldi, Capriati/Perry, Hingis/Garcia (oops, did I speak too soon on that one?)
GOING, GOING...and almost gone: The old Spanish Armada. ASV is gone, and 30-year old Conchita Martinez (#34) is the highest-ranked Spaniard. Guess it was a one-generaton aberration.

>>>TENNISRULZ.com PLAYER AWARDS
**PLAYERS OF THE YEAR**
1.Serena Williams..."Serena Slam" in '03?
2.Venus Williams...her little sister cast a huge shadow in 2002. Venus didn't win a slam or Tier I this year.
3.Jennifer Capriati...take away her Oz title (her only one in 2002) and everyone would have been asking "what happened to Jen?"
4.Kim Clijsters...a bad start, a bad slam season -- then a raging month that produced three titles and an 18-match winning streak that took her to #4 for the year. It'll be a bear to defend those late-season points in 2003, though.
5.Anna Smashnova...four titles, but a propensity for early-round losses (and poor slam performances) kept her out of the Top 15.
6.Daniela Hantuchova...a Tier I title & Fed Cup crown, but still searching for consistency away from the big stages.
7.Monica Seles...her WTA Chsp. performance might mean one final victory lap season could be in order for 2003.
8.Justine Henin...couldn't follow up her breakthrough 2001 slam performances, but still finished in the Top 5 and will return with a new name.
9.Jelena Dokic...her grasscourt title in Birmingham means, at 19, she's won crowns on every surface in just two years as a full-time player on tour.
10.Paola Suarez...#1 doubles player, and capable of some huge upsets (Capriati and Hantuchova in '02) in singles, too.
HM-Chanda Rubin...finally healthy, she reminded everyone why she was such a breath of fresh of air back in 1996.
