Time for Another Party on the Lawns?

Edition #133 is coming in...

5...4...3...2...1...play.

A look back at the Wimbledon qualifying rounds...

*WIMBLEDON "Q-PLAYER OF THE WEEK" WINNERS*
2006 Meilen Tu, USA
2007 Hsieh Su-Wei, TPE & Olga Govortsova, BLR
2008 Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, ESP & Eva Hrdinova, CZE
2009 Viktoria Kutuzova, UKR
2010 Kaia Kanepi, EST
2011 Alexa Glatch, USA
2012 Sandra Zaniewska, POL
2013 Petra Cetkovska, CZE
2014 Michelle Larcher de Brito, POR
2015 Petra Cetkovska, CZE
2016 Mandy Minella, LUX
2017 Petra Martic, CRO
2018 Mona Barthel, GER
2019 Coco Gauff, USA
[2019 slams]
AO: Astra Sharma, AUS
RG: Elena Rybakina, KAZ
WI: Coco Gauff, USA

*TOP Q-PLAYERS*
1. Coco Gauff, USA (15, #301)
...already the youngest player to top the junior rankings, Gauff is now the youngest Wimbledon qualifier of the Open era (and the youngest in the MD at SW19 since Laura Robson in '09). Opening qualifying by upsetting #1-seeded Aliona Bolsova (RG 4th Rd. as a qualifier), then finishing it off a win over #19 Greet Minnen, the wild card entrant advances to her first career slam MD without dropping a set. One day will this be a "remember when..." moment?

===============================================
2. Kristie Ahn, USA (27, #191)
...Ahn will make her SW19 debut after sweeping through six sets vs. Naomi Broady, #32 Tamara Korpatsch and #3 Lauren Davis. Consider it her reward for grass court experimentation gone wrong...

It's a good thing, because she seems to have a steep learning curve...

===============================================
3. Giulia Gatto-Monticone, ITA (31, #162)
...now the third-ranked Italian, GGM had never played on grass in her career until this month. Turns out, she's not half bad on the stuff. Weeks after qualifying for her first slam MD in Paris, the 31-year old did the same to reach her second by running her grass record to 4-1 with Q-round wins over Raluca Serban, #21 Wang Xiyu and Oceane Dodin.

===============================================
4. Arina Rodionova, AUS (29, #212)
...two years ago, Rodionova qualified for and won her first two slam MD matches in London and New York. After six consecutive failed qualifying attempts since, this successful attempt will see her in her first major MD in two and a half years. After surviving a 7-6(6)/6-7(2)/8-6 opening round match against Asia Muhammad, Rodionova knocked off #4 Misaki Doi and outlasted Danielle Lao in three sets (after dropping the 1st at love).

===============================================
5. Tereza Martincova, CZE (24, #139)
...the Czech makes her Wimbledon debut after posting wins over Caroline Dolehide and, in the final Q-round match to finish, #2 Anna Blinkova. Having lost in the Q3 in Melbourne earlier this year, Martincova makes her first slam MD appearance since the '17 U.S. Open.

===============================================

*OTHER WI QUALIFIERS*
Paula Badosa, ESP (21/#126) - the '15 RG Jr. champ completed her second slam Q-run (w/ AO) of 2019
Ana Bogdan, ROU (26/#134) - she posted a MD win at SW19 in '17, and won seven matches in majors from 2016-18
Ysaline Bonaventure, BEL (24/#115) - the Waffle is one of four women (w/ Badosa, Kalinskaya & Haddad) with the AO/WI Q-run combo in 2019
Varvara Flink, RUS (22/#140) - after losing in AO/RG qualifying this season, the Russian makes her slam debut after winning an 8-6 3rd set in the final round vs. ex-Hordette Elena Rybakina
Beatriz Haddad, BRA (23/#121) - still re-climbing the rankings after an injury break, the Brazilian (who won a MD match at the AELTC in '17) adds a second '19 slam qualifying run to her resume
Kaja Juvan, SLO (18/#125) - the teenager squandered a lead in RG qualifying, but made her slam debut in Paris as a LL (where she lost another lead). She'll make her Wimbledon debut after winning a 10-8 3rd set over Valentini Grammatikopoulou here, then defeating Basak Eraydin in three and finishing things off with a win over #6-seed Christine McHale.
Anna Kalinskaya, RUS (20/#144) - the Hordette has qualified at three of the last four majors (including AO '19), and will now look to improve upon her 0-3 career slam MD mark
Lesley Kerkhove, NED (27/#203) - after a Rosmalen WD final and $100K Ilkley singles Q-run, Kerkhove will make her SW19 debut after staging a comeback in the final round against former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki after losing the 1st set at love
Caty McNally, USA (17/#164) - a three-time Wimbledon girls doubles finalist (2016-18), McNally will make her slam MD debut after not losing a set in qualifying vs. Kurumi Nara, #23 Priscilla Hon and Jana Cepelova.
Gabriela Ruse, ROU (21/#177) - at last year's Wimbledon, Ruse (after another qualifying run) had Aga Radwanska on the ropes in the 1st Round, holding five MP vs. the Pole in what turned out to be her final win at the All-England Club. As a junior, Ruse reached the girls singles semis in 2014. Could this be the early stage of a Pironkova/Lisicki-like career in which the Romanian's long-term Wimbledon prowess far outweighs her results elsewhere?
Yanina Wickmayer, BEL (29/#148) - a decade out from her slam semifinal run in New York, Wickmayer has 41 career slam MD wins. She reached the Round of 16 at Wimbledon in 2011.

*WI LUCKY LOSERS*
Marie Bouzkova, CZE (20/#116) - despite losing to Ana Bogdan in the final round, Bouzkova will make her Wimbledon debut as a LL, the second straight major at which she's entered the draw in such a way

Lauren Davis, USA (25/#96) - her RG appearance (as a winner of the USTA's WC) was her first in a slam MD since her loss to Halep in the '18 AO. She escaped a Q1 hole this week vs. Bibiane Schoofs (down 6-1/5-3 and MP), then lost in the final round to countrywoman Kristie Ahn. But... a reprieve.
Christina McHale, USA (27/#109) - she's reached the 3rd Round of majors five times, but they all came between 2011-13. After losing in AO & RG (and WI) qualifying, she still joins the stampede of LL's into the MD thanks to so many injuries to higher-ranked players.

NEXT UP IF MORE WITHDRAW: Blinkova, Rybakina, Danilovic & Minnen

=2019 WIMBLEDON WILD CARDS=
Harriet Dart, GBR (22): Dart is 0-2 in slam MD, and reached the AO draw via a successful qualifying run in January
Monica Niculescu, ROU (31): the Romanian gets the nod with her de facto WC playoff match win in the Ilkley $100K final over Timea Babos. She reached the Wimbledon Round of 16 in 2015, but (a bit surprisingly) her last slam MD win was at the U.S. Open in 2017.
Katie Swan, GBR (20): receiving a WC for a second straight year, Swan recently went public with a load of issues she's dealt with in the past year. She won a 1st Round match at SW19 in '18.
[ORIGINAL WILD CARDS, DESIGNATION REMOVED DUE TO AUTOMATIC ENTRY STATUS]
Iga Swiatek, POL (18): the '18 Wimbledon girls champ, Swiatek reached the Round of 16 in Paris. She qualified to reach the AO draw earlier this year.
Heather Watson, GBR (27): Watson made her slam debut as a WC at Wimbledon in 2010, and has reached the 3rd Round three times. She came within two points of her first slam second week run in '15 (coming that close to defeating Serena Williams), and has reached two MX finals at SW19 (winning in '16).

1. WI Q2 - #20 Kaja Juvan def. Basak Eraydin
...4-6/7-6(3)/6-3.
After a handful of blown leads in the recent weeks (in the Wimbledon qualifying and in the 1st Round, then again in the Bol 125 semis), the Slovenian teenager turns the tables and rallies from 6-4/4-1, 40/15 down to win here, then qualifies for the MD a round later.

===============================================
2. WI Q1 - (WC) Sabine Lisicki def. #27 Timea Babos
...6-3/3-6/6-3.
Undertaking another comeback from a string of injuries, Lisicki (briefly) rediscovered her old grass court magic, firing 21 aces to kick off the qualifying competition.

Then got a win over Ankita Raina...

WI Q3 - Lesley Kerkhove def. (WC) Sabine Lisicki 0-6/6-4/6-4
...
but came up short of the MD after taking the opening set at love in match #3. Ouch.

===============================================
3. WI Q1 - #3 Lauren Davis def. Bibiane Schoofs
...1-6/7-6(3)/6-4.
Davis' Q-round experience was rocky, as she was immediately down 6-1/5-3 and MP down here, and lost in the final round... but she'll *still* be playing a MD match at the AELTC this week as a LL.
===============================================
HM- WI Q3 - #28 Varvara Flink def. #8 Elena Rybakina
...6-3/4-6/8-6.
In recent weeks, Rybakina has lifted her game (reaching her maiden tour SF) and looked like a potentially dangerous MD floater at SW19 should she find a way in the MD. But she came up short here at the final hurdle against her former countrywoman, twice failing to serve out the win, and just missed being added to the draw as a LL. She'll be back... either in New York, or if a couple more players pull out of the MD by Monday.

=ROUND OF 16 PREDICTIONS=
#1 Barty/#26 Muguruza def. #22 Vekic - See below.
#5 Kerber def. #18 Goerges - Goerges' could be Serena's spot, but I'll boycott a deep slam run pick until we've seen enough to do it for a reason other than "Well, it's Serena."

...dubbed the "group of death," and for good reason. Barty's quarter includes her, defending champ Kerber, seven-time champ Serena, former winners Muguruza and Sharapova, '18 semifinalist Goerges, and (just to name a few) Bencic, Vekic, Riske, Kanepi, Kuznetsova and Pavlyuchenkova (all, including the Russians in a *good* mood, who'd be second week dark horses-or-better under normal draw conditions). Even qualifier Ruse has shown an affinity for the Wimbledon lawns, and held 5 MP on Radwanska in the 1st Round last year. In truth, I was hoping for Barty and Muguruza to be on opposite sides of the draw so that I could take a flier on the Spaniard (who, let's face it, is due for a big result) in a final against the current hot pick. So, naturally, they might meet *as early as they possibly could* as seeded players: in the 3rd Round. So, I guess I should look at that one as my "final," right?

Yep, so consider them a dual pick. Whichever might come through that entryway to the second week represents them both the rest of the way.

#4 Bertens def. #21 Mertens - so far, Kiki hasn't exactly handled favorite status well in the slams, though
#25 Anisimova def. Siniakova - with Kvitova ailing in this section (and maybe withdrawing, or being physically compromised) I just can't pick her through, so this could be anyone -- from Sloane to Mladenovic to Konta to Strycova

...it's almost unfair for the Barty section to have so many contenders, while this one has so many question marks. I don't if Anisimova is ready for a grass run, but she's sparked in the first two slams, so why not? If Petra truly turns out to be a non-factor, this quarter could produce a stunner of a semifinalist.

#24 Martic def. Gasparyan - Martic was in the Round of 16 in '17, and is coming off her best grass result in Birmingham
#3 Ka.Pliskova def. #16 Vondrousova - if not for the hip, Ostapenko might be a legit dark horse here

...talk about opportunity. It's there for *so* many here. From Pliskova, who's never really clicked at SW19, to #8 Svitolina, whose out-of-form (partly due to a knee injury, but likely also because of a lack of focus) current reality makes one question if she can even escape early round matches vs. Gavrilova, Gasparyan (who's already beaten her once this grass season) and Sakkari/Barthel, to Ostapenko (defending SF points), coming in looking scalding-hot-off-the-ground-if-not-bang-your-head-erratic-on-serve *before* injuring her hip, this quarter's draw could swing W-I-D-E open if Pliskova falters.

#7 Halep def. #17 Keys - would love to see Venus in this mix to watch what happens, though
#27 Kenin def. #14 Wozniacki - how much confidence did Paris and Mallorca give Kenin?

...is Osaka right, or in the early stages of the exact opposite of that? She could easily lose to any number of opponents (Putintseva, Swiataek, Kenin/Yastremska) in her path in the early rounds, or she could use their body shells as steps on which to climb deep into another slam. I'll go with the former. Of course, 39-year old Venus' 1st Round match vs. 15-year old Coco Gauff is *the* opening round highlight (you could fit a fully grown Ash Barty between their ages), with the first week focus of the quarter shifting onto the shoulders of the winner.

=QUARTERFINAL PREDICTIONS=
#1 Barty/#26 Muguruza def. #5 Kerber
#25 Anisimova def. #4 Bertens
#3 Ka.Pliskova def. #24 Martic
#7 Halep def. #27 Kenin

=SEMIFINAL PREDICTIONS=
#1 Barty/#26 Muguruza def. #25 Anisimova
#3 Ka.Pliskova def. #7 Halep

=FINAL PREDICTION=
#1 Barty/#26 Muguruza def. #3 Ka.Pliskova

...hey, it's only a cop-out if you let it be. (P.S. - My current headache is pretty much why I stopped making weekly picks in the first place.)

All for now.

Muguruza? You have guts. Then again, 20 women have a legit shot at the title.

One of the reasons I didn't make Barty the favorite is that Kerber(Probably), Serena(definite, though others need to), and Konta are getting the roof. If it rains, Barty + Barty/Azarenka will be backed up.

And even though a SF is possible for Bertens, still think Sharapova gets the roof before her.

Well, only if she beats Barty, which is admittedly a long shot on current form (though she *did* look very good in Paris, until she suddenly didn't). But if she did, the perception changes (and she's even beaten Serena in slams before)...

You know, that's a really good point. With all those players in the same part of the draw, they'll all be playing the same days, which could cause an awful lot of scheduling issues (and "outrages") as they try to make sure the trains stay on time.
