US.12 - The Day Before the Drama

=DAY 12 NOTES=
...Friday was yet another day decimated on the outside courts due to rain, while play went on on Ashe and Armstrong under the protective cover of their respective roofs.

As a result, the only match in any women's competition was #4 Elise Mertens & Aryna Sabalenka defeating Caroline Dolehide & Vania King 4-6/6-3/6-4 to advance to the WD final to face #8 Victoria Azarenka & Ash Barty.

The winners of this year's "Sunshine Double" in Indian Wells and Miami, both Mertens and Sabalenka are seeking their maiden slam title.

Weather making a mess of juniors and wheelchair.

Amused that Canada has gone all in on Andreescu and changed We The North to She The North.

On the other hand, WTA needs to learn how to promote Sabalenka. Has a goofy personality that can draw people in.

3 events this week, and Zhengzhou is a Premier. Then the following 3 weeks have Osaka(Premier), Wuhan(Premier 5), and Beijing(Premier Mandatory). Expect random results the first two weeks with limited fields, then the push for YEC and Zhuhai starts.

Doubles notes:
Barty would be first Aussie to win US Open since herself last year, and the first since Stosur won Australia this year.

Mertens would be the first woman from Belgium to win the US Open. First at a slam since Clijsters won 2003 Wimbledon.

In the two sides of the same coin edition-Sabalenka or Azarenka would be the first from Belarus to win US Open since Zvereva in 1996, or any slam since 1997 Wimbledon, also Zvereva.

Team Title(Azarenka/Barty) vs Team Potential. Both Azarenka and Barty won Junior singles titles, but the fact that Azarenka is still looking for her first doubles slam is a surprise. She won 4 junior titles, so you feel that she is due.

The odd thing? If she loses, she would be a former #1 in singles that lost her first 4 doubles slams, which even done in reverse order, does apply to Barty.

Fun fact-Andreescu(2017) and Vondrousova(2015) both won 2 junior slams in doubles. 2019 winners are on the clock.

Stat of the Day- 6- The number of countries or republics that won their maiden slam title this decade.

Only fitting that a decade in which Italy(Schiavone) won their first in the second slam, has a contender in the final slam. Canada has a chance to make it 7, after Belarus, China, Latvia, Denmark, and Japan added their name to the list of winners.

What about the next decade? Ukraine is in pole position, with others like Estonia, Kazakhstan, Poland seemingly close.

Famous last words. ;)

#TheyGotTheBeat #SheGotTheBeat

Ha! Good pull on the Vika/Ash statistical flip.

Although, as Gauff alluded to last week, the juniors hardly ever get any time off in big events. Two matches a day (and maybe even another in doubes) are common. Child labor... :)

Weather delays are the only thing that make a larger U.S. Open WC field potentially problematic. But they *could* just start playing on Monday instead of Wednesday/Thursday to give more of a scheduling cushion.
