RG.15- Au Revoir, Paris

Why take just one when you can go home with two?

=DAY 15 NOTES=
...completing her dream event, Barbora Krejcikova joined with longtime running mate Katerina Siniakova to take the RG doubles title on Sunday to become the first woman to sweep the events in Paris since Mary Pierce in 2000. The Czechs defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands & Iga Swiatek 6-4/6-2 in the final.

Thus far, through two majors in 2021, Krejcikova has claimed three of the six slam titles handed out, having also won the MX at the Australian Open in February. She very nearly won a fourth, since she and Siniakova also reached the AO doubles final. Still, after yesterday's singles win gave her titles in all three disciplines in her career, with today's victory she's now won a title in all three THIS SEASON alone.

...in Nottingham, Johanna Konta -- after releasing yet another coach, so the decision looks good... for now -- picked up her first tour singles title since 2017, defeating Zhang Shuai 6-2/6-1 in the final. She's the first Brit to take the singles title since the event's inclusion on the WTA schedule in 2015, and the first to hoist a tour-level singles title on home soil since Sue Barker in 1981.

It's Konta's maiden grass court title, after twice falling in the tournament final in 2017-18.

Lyudmyla Kichenok & Makoto Ninomiya won the doubles final over Caroline Dolehide & Storm Sanders (hmmm, I wonder if Summer will be at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials this week?), winning a 10-8 match TB. It's Kichenok's fifth tour title, while Ninomiya now has three.

...the French Riviera Open saw yet another final meeting between Diede de Groot and Yui Kamiji, and Diede the Great prevailed once again (further assuming the role of Navratilova in this Martina/Chrissie-like series), winning 6-2/6-1 to improve to 4-1 vs. the world #2 this season. The Dutch #1 heads into the grass season on a 13-match winning streak, and has gone 18-1 in '21.

De Groot & Aniek Van Koot also claimed the doubles, just like at RG, with a love & 2 win over Kamiji and Saki Takamuro. De Groot is on an 11-match doubles wining streak (9 w/ Van Koot), and is 11-1 on the season.

...in ITF action, Beatriz Haddad Maia won the $25K challenger in Montemor-o-Nova, Portugal. The Brazilian's third '21 title run is her seventh since her return from suspension last year.

In Vilnius, Lithuana, Bosnia's Dea Herdzelas picked up her third circuit win of the season.

Krejcikova did it! Got the storybook ending. One of the best stories in a 2 week period with a number of good ones.

Kuzmova drops to 153 in new rankings.

Swiatek up to 42 in doubles, now has an outside chance at an Olympic spot there too.

Stat of the Week - 8 - The number of times Serena Williams won singles and doubles at the same slam.

One of the things that stood out when Krejcikova was the first to double at the French since Mary Pierce, was that Serena had not done it. That is how special Krejcikova's week has been.

You wonder how Serena missed, but in pure Serena style, she won doubles there the first time she played in 1999. She then skipped it until 2009. Of the 3 times she won RG in singles, she only played doubles once, losing in the 1st rd in 2013.

However, of the 23 singles slams she has won, she played doubles 14 times, winning 8.

Serena Double:

1999 USO
2002 W
2003 AO
2009 AO
2009 W
2010 AO
2012 W
2016 W

She is human after all.

Quiz Time!

We know Barbora Krejcikova has had success in doubles slams. But what about the regular tour? Which event has she won in doubles?

A.Dubai
B.Luxembourg
C.Indian Wells
D.Quebec

Interlude- Olympian McKayla Maroney.

Answer!

Winner of 9 doubles titles, (B)Luxembourg is where it began, being her first tour final. In 2014, she teamed with Lucie Hradecka, but lost to Timea Bacsinszky and Kristina Barrois.

She has not won (A)Dubai, which stands out because she reached the final with Zheng Saisai in 2020. This is the only one of her last 14 finals without Siniakova.

(C)Indian Wells is also a loss, to the new team(at the time) of Mertens/Sabalenka. This is the last non slam finals loss for Krejcikova/Siniakova.

She won (D)Quebec, an event that does not exist anymore, with a player in An-Sophie Mestach, who has since retired. This was in 2015, showing that the singles overnight success has been around for some time, getting this, her first doubles title 6 years before her first singles title.

5 On the Up Side- All Grass Edition.

We have a 250 and 500, so diving in.

1.Garcia. Birmingham pick hasn't had a great year, but is both a Nottingham and Mallorca winner. Ranking drops to 74, but it is more important to find Wimbledon form.
2.Muchova- Breaking my own rule as I normally say pick a first time winner at a new event. Truth is, she only has 2 MD on grass, and the last one was a Wimbledon QF. If the ab injury she has been struggling with all season is better, she could make herself a threat at Wimbledon.
3.Rybakina- Impressive run at RG, now switches to grass, where she already reached SF at Den Bosch. You would think that her game fits grass, let's see what she can do.
4.Vekic- 2013 Birmingham RU(and 2 time Nottingham RU) returns. Her return from knee surgery has been slow, but needs this week to play herself into dangerous floater territory. Floater? Yes, her ranking drops to 54, so even a title won't get her seeded.
5.Konta- And you wonder why we make a big deal out of surfaces. Konta, who had dropped down to 33 in live rank, used the second week of RG wisely. Went to Nottingham and won, getting her back to 30. Last week before Wimbledon seeds. Last 4 in-Kontaveit, Konta, Riske, Kudermetova. First 4 out- Badosa, Alexandrova, Kasatkina, Zhang. Konta needs to keep her form, as she has QF to defend at Wimbledon.

5 On the Down Side.

1.How does that Paula Abdul song go? "I take two steps forward, I take two steps back." Boulter looked good last week, reached the QF, took a 75 min set off Lauren Davis, then retired 2 games later. You would assume that there is a Wimbledon spot waiting for her, but is she healthy enough to take advantage?
2.Kerber- Not a down. The only German direct entrant(Petkovic-WC, Niemeier-Q)gets to play a grass event in Berlin. Oddly enough, she has been around long enough to have played Berlin when it was a clay event. Coming full circle, the first event she tried to qualify for was Berlin in 2003. She lost in Q that year, as well as 04 and 05. She got MDWC in 2008. Others in that draw and this? Azarenka and Cornet.
3.Ahn- Ended her 7 match losing streak on all levels last week. ^ were to players ranked below her. She then retired from her next match. Has no momentum.
4.Bolsova- 5-10 on the year, she does the electric slide down the rankings, dropping 44 spots to 151. Better on clay than grass, she hasn't been good enough anywhere.
5.Anisimova- The good? Former Mallorca QF is playing on grass. The bad? With no track record on how Berlin's grass will play, Birmingham would have been a smarter option. Dropping to 79, she may be in need of changing her team. Too talented to be ranked this low, and I can't just blame it on COVID.

Quiz: went with Dubai (though I'd known she'd won Madrid this spring, not that that mattered). :/

Haha. Yeah, I've seen that Maroney ad recently (and I'm sure it'll get a lot of play during the Olympics). I give her credit, she's gotten a lot mileage out of that one medal stand reaction. ;)

Hey, Vandeweghe *did* finally get a MD win on grass this week.
