Le moment de la victoire.#OBN21 pic.twitter.com/YaKAG4W3gW
With a 2018 Wimbledon QF standing alone as her best big event result until her final eight run in Tokyo a few weeks ago, Giorgi rode her Olympic momentum (which included a 3rd Round win over Karolina Pliskova) all the way to the Montreal title, a journey which not only included her biggest SF and final results (her other eight tour finals, in which she'd gone a disappointing 2-6 after failing to convert MP more than once, had come at the International/250 level) but also victories over four seeded players (#9 Elise Mertens, #7 Petra Kvitova, #15 Coco Gauff and #4 Pliskova yet again) as well as Nadia Podoroska and Jessie Pegula. Giorgi had lost to Pegula in the '19 Washington final, as well as to Pliskova in the '14 Linz championship match, so her success in Quebec this week serves as something of a "make-up" for all (well, a few) of the times the big-hitting firebrand has come up "just short" or failed to use one big in-tournament result as a stepping stone to something greater in the rounds that followed. This time she did just that, sweeping through the competition while dropping just one set (vs. Pegula/SF) all week long.

The win over Pliskova gives Giorgi three victories over the Czech this summer alone (w/ Eastbourne 1r) and provides the majority of her four (a career best) Top 10 wins this season (two in Eastbourne, then the most recent pair over Pliskova). The title run will allow Giorgi to more than slice her singles ranking in half, as she'll rocket up from a (too low) #71 to a more acceptable (based on her ability) #34.

Having already reached her second career slam QF (Wimbledon) and become the tour's first Tunisian/Arab/North African singles champion this season, Jabeur matched her career-best WTA 1000 result ('20 Dubai/Cincy-NYC) with a QF run in Montreal that saw her knock off Clara Burel, Dasha Kasatkina (her Birmingham final victim) and defending '19 champ Bianca Andreescu in an epic three-setter under the lights that included two medical time-outs (both by the Canadian), two rain delays and over two and a half hours of play. Against Pegula in the QF, Jabeur won the 1st set and served for the match in the 2nd, coming within two points of the win before the Bannerette surged back to win her fourth straight three-setter of the week. Jabeur will add yet another "first to..." to her career resume on Monday, as she'll make her Top 20 debut.

We start with "Another Day in Paradise" (Phil Collins), "Opposites Attract" (Paula Abdul and, umm) and Sinead O'Connor's imcomparable performance of the Prince-penned "Nothing Compres 2 U." Personally, I think things started to go astray from the still-classic 1980s style of music sometime in 1993. By 1996, I'm going "????" with a lot of these songs. Hey, I didn't know Michael and Janet Jackson had a song together. Holy crap... "MmmBop" was in 1997!? By 1998, Aerosmith (an act that started in 1970) was back at #1. 1999... Britney. Honesty, I appreciate Backstreet now more than I did at the time. Longevity is good. And we end up with Santana's ubiquitous "Smooth."
5 Comments:
Sabalenka/Stephens should get down ballot votes for Match of the Year.
6 hours later, after Collins/Halep: Sabalenka/Stevens isn't even Match of the Tournament.
Marino is old school. Big serve, lack of movement. I don't expect this to happen, but since she is 10 years out from her career high ranking, she has time. It took Lucic almost 19 years, from May 1998(32) to January 2017(29) to pass her previous one.
Giorgi only had 30 DF in 6 matches, including 0 vs Gauff. For her, those are good numbers. Add her improved defense, and we got the run we always new she was capable of.

Australia has nobody as their top player is ranked 70.
The shock here is that the Netherlands only has 2, though they have 4 of the Top 18 in the world- de Groot-1, Van Koot-3, Griffioen-11, Spaanstra-18. They are slipping, having had 4 of the Top 6 seeds in 2016, after having 4 of 5 in 2012, and the Top 4 in 2008.
Depending on the draw, we may have history. In all 8 Paralympic finals, one Dutch player has faced off against another.
Quiz Time!
Which Dutch Paralympic RU did not win a slam in singles or doubles?
A.Sharon Walraven
B.Sonja Peters
C.Korie Homan
D.Aniek Van Koot
Interlude- Federer art.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkDmCTIVBiI
Answer!
(D)Van Koot is the most obvious wrong answer. RU in both 2012 and 2016, only won 3 singles slams, but 18 doubles, so she is one of the most accomplished of all time. Won doubles grand slam in doubles with Griffioen in 2018.
(C)Homan is wrong, though the 2008 RU took Vergeer to the limit, losing 7-6 in 3rd set. Only 1 singles slam, mainly because she lost 6 finals to Vergeer, she won a doubles grand slam with her in 2009. Confusing, but possible, as Wimbledon started doubles 7 years before singles.
2000 RU (A)Walraven may be the surprise. Also a doubles grand slam winner, it was more than a decade later(2011), claiming 4 of her 7 titles that year.
That leaves 2004 RU (B)Peters as the correct answer. One reason why is that most of her career was before the slams existed, the first singles being in 2004.
5 On the Up Side.
1.Andreescu- Did not play Cinci in 2019, and this should pay off(if she stays healthy) at the US Open. Dubbed And3eescu, she is 8-3 in 3 set matches this year.
2.Stephens- 2017 SF comes in playing better each week. Yes, she blew a 3rd set break last week, but has become a threat again.
3.Sabalenka- 2018 SF is the one player I don't worry about in back to back weeks. With Osaka defending a huge chunk of points this month, most likely Sabalenka will make it up to #2.
4.Swiatek- No back to back losses this season, only non Top 40 loss was to Konjuh, and that loss looks better by the week. Not an easy draw, but she has the talent to go far.
5.Osaka- Won 7 matches to win AO, has won 7 matches since. Andreescu has won 12. With a week off between Cinci and the US Open, I can't project a walkover, plus she's playing for Haiti. Will that keep her motivated for a deep run?
5 On the Down Side.
1.Podoroska- Collins, Jabeur and Kudermetova took themselves off the list. With Chicago and Cleveland coming up, this is the time for the highest ranked player without a title to get one. Only one of 3(Rogers, Tomljanovic) in the Top 50 without one, she needs to take advantage before her RG points come off in 2 months. Without them should be around 80.
2.Brady- Foot injury has derailed a career best stretch. Another with a huge amount of points to defend, can she find some form to get her through IW?
3.Pliskova- Only for this week, as reaching back to back finals in Montreal and Cincinnati is hard. However, is she a US Open finalist? In recent years, we had Kerber(2016) and Serena(2018 & 19) reach both the Wimbledon and US Open finals. Could Pliskova do the same?
4.Jabeur- Pulled a David Copperfield against Pegula. Her 3rd set disappearing act made the great first set seem like an illusion. She has the game, now needs some consistency.
5.McNally- Cincinnati girl gets WC she may not deserve. Having a so-so season, she is one to watch when USO WC are announced on Wednesday. Has 3rd rd USO pts to defend, and needs this, as she has lost in Q in all 3 slams this year.
I will say, I like the move to have the U.S. Open WC competition in the same year as the Paralympics for the first time, but as I've said for a while now the slam WC fields really should be bigger.
The AO or the US should make the move to try to become THE WC major and increase the singles fields from 8 to 16, or at least 12 with the Top 4 getting byes.
Nike pushing de Groot in ads might be a big move toward getting more exposure and causing some changes (in a perfect world), and a Golden Slam season wouldn't hurt, either. :)
Quiz: I was pretty positive that one was Peters, after looking at those lists for the past few years. ;)
Things like that Federer art always get me (esp. when people use smaller photos combined to create a large image). I can't believe he tipped it over like that!
Andreescu: "If she stays healthy..." (Uh-oh, now you've done it.)
Well, we know Osaka will get headlines, one way or the other. (Ooh, did I say that "too aggressively?") :/
USO WC dropped today, and Krueger(18), Navarro(NCAA), Venus, Baptiste, Volynets, Vandeweghe and Sanders get them. Lastly, McNally did get one over the likes of Scott.
Duval gets one for Q.
2 other stories this week. Pavlyuchenkova pulled out of Cincinnati becasue she doesn't have a US Visa. Neither does Gasanova, who is solidly in Q.
The other? With the WTA site still behind on the rankings, what will be the US Open seed procedure if this lasts through next week?
1.Use rankings through 8/9, which would penalize potential seed Giorgi and others.
2.Use projected rankings through 8/23.
3.Arbitrary seeding, which might mean 2 time winner Osaka at 1 and Serena at 8. I would rather they not do this, but the publicity/outcry if it happens would be massive.
