This title run improves Tauson's indoor HC mark in '21 to 13-3, and 21-6 since the start of last year, and she'll rise to a new career high (from #70) of #52. Next up: her major breakthrough in 2022?

Samsonova has been one of the Russians on the move in 2021. The 22-year old notched her maiden slam MD win in Melbourne, rallying from 5-3 in the 3rd to upset Paula Badosa. Her star-turn on the grass in Berlin, where she won her first tour title (def. Belinda Bencic in the final), earned a wild card into Wimbledon, where she reached the Round of 16 and cracked the Top 60. In Luxembourg, Samsonova rode a trio of wins over Misaki Doi, Oceane Dodin and (again) top-seeded Bencic to reach her second semifinal of the season. She lost to fellow '21 grass title winner Ostapenko, but will climb to another career high of #44, leaving her around 300 points behind #34 Ekaterina Alexandrova (the #4-ranked Hordette on tour) as the season's final months stretch begins.

In Portoroz, Kalinskaya & Mihalikova, old junior doubles partners (they won the '16 AO girls together), picked up their first title together as pros in five years (after $100K and $10K ITF wins in '16) and their first at tour-level. The duo upset top-seeded Klepac/Zidansek and advanced to the final (Kalinskaya's first w/o Viktoria Kuzmova, and Mihalikova's first, period) without dropping a set. Once there, they won a 12-10 match TB over Aleksandra Krunic & Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove. On match point, it looks like Krunic tried to be the Bracelet, but missed and likely distracted Kerkhove, whose error ended the match. Oh, well (Krunic had been 14-6 in WTA/WTA 125 WD finals).

A female guide leads a small group of people -- parents and children -- up the steps outside a university building before they all go inside.
INT.UNIVERSITY HALLWAY
The group slowly walks down a long hallway lined with doors leading to classrooms. Everyone looks around at their surroundings with expressions of awe, impressed with what they see.
One of the young potential stars runs up to a classroom door, looking through the glass. She sees Victoria Azarenka at the front of a class of young students.
INT.CLASSROOM
Azarenka demonstrates the proper celebratory clenched-fist technique.
Each of the students do their own version. Vika smiles at their efforts.
INT.UNIVERSITY HALLWAY
As the group travels down the hallway, they peek through the door windows of other rooms, eyeing the instructors teaching rows of eager students. We see inside the classrooms as we hear the guide’s voice as she continues to talk to the prospective university attendees and their parents.
INT.CLASSROOM
We see Leylah Fernandez make a sweeping gesture toward the students, as if demanding that they stand up and cheer. Once they do, the young professor shakes her fist and lifts it high above her head.
In one classroom, Serena Williams, on bended knee, raises her fist in triumph. A rather studious-looking member of the glass quickly takes notes. We view a CLOSE-UP of her Notebook and see that she’s hand-drawn a rather intricate portrait of Williams’ pose.
We see Francesca Schiavone, on her back, roll over and kiss the floor. A student in the front row makes a face, as if she can taste the floor from her seat.
Angelique Kerber, in a lab coat and with a pointer in hand, stands at the head of the class in front of a chalkboard with a complex diagram of herself celebrating -- complete with lines leading to handwritten notations -- drawn on it. A student stands next to her with a racket in her hand, apparently part of a demonstration.
Kerber clenches and vigorously pump both fists -- one still holding the pointer toward the ceiling -- while simultaneously lifting a leg. The student tries to emulate her actions, but comes up a bit short as she pumps just one fist while raising her leg, and holds the racket pointed toward the floor. Kerber quickly lends assistance.
The student finally succeeds.
The student’s shout fills the room, and the outside hallway.
INT.UNIVERSITY HALLWAY
As the group continues to walk down the hallway, one girl trails behind the others. She practices her moves, doing a Venus-like twirl and then waving to the invisible fans lining the walls. She bows, then runs to catch up with the others.
A school bell rings over the logo.
END.

Commercial is missing the Petko dance.
Samsonova section is off, but right under Alexandrova.
With Guadalajara hosting finals, Top 8 in race are Barty, Sabalenka, Krejcikova, Pliskova, Swiatek, Sakkari, Osaka, Muguruza. Alts are Jabeur and Mertens as Pavlyuchenkova drops to 11. Raducanu is 14.
BJK Cup will be best of 3, so more chance for random results.
Cornet/Minella was a struggle bus match. Minella tried her best, but even with the crowd support, couldn't pull it off. Kind of fitting that they met, as Cornet understood the situation. She has played French Open MD 17 times, while counting Q, this was Minella's 17th Luxembourg.
Saw the pick of Raducanu and Medvedev, and it made me notice how little variety there has been. Last time both the men and women had a first time champ? 2004- Gaudio/Myskina.
WTA article on Novotna(Ivanovic/Goerges) has some interesting Luxembourg history.
Vondrousova reached SF this week, but drops 8 spots to 43.
Stat of the Week- 212- MD WC in 2019.
212 sounds like a big number, but that was in 57 events. What I was curious about which is more successful- the local, or the foreign player?
First the numbers, then the notes.
212- WC
131- Local WC
81 - Foreign WC
47 - Wins for local WC
47 - Wins for foreign WC
Foreign players normally do better, though that it is because they are normally more well known and higher ranked.
Kuznetsova was the 2019 WC star. Ranked 107 at the end of 2018, she was 109 when she started her season in April in Lugano. She went 12-8 using WC, peaking with a final in Cincinnati.
The rough part is that she went 4-5 without one, going 0-3 in slams. Having dipped as low as 198 during the year, she ended the season at 57.
Raducanu may not have happened in 2019. Wimbledon only used 3 WC, 2 to GB players, using next in.
Indian Wells was the best event for WC, with 6 winning a match, 5 Americans, plus the winner in Andreescu.
There were 5* events without a local player. Morocco, Hua Hin and Auckland are 3. Not a surprise that Auckland did not have a player from New Zealand, but they didn't have any form Australia either. The other 2, depending on how you rank them, were Doha and Dubai, though Fatma Al Nabhani from Oman was in both.
The only events with all local WC and no wins were Monterrey and Tashkent.
Stuttgart(Siegemund/Petkovic) was the only event with more than one in which every local won.
There were only 3 events in which every WC won a match. Two of those in Prague and Morocco were played the same week.
Both had 3 WC. The other had 2, and that was Moscow, which was won by WC Belinda Bencic. The same week that Ostapenko won Luxembourg, also with WC.
Kerber reached the final in Eastbourne with WC after getting a bye. She defeated Halep in QF, who also had WC and bye.
Quiz Time!
Counting qualifying, how many wins did Mandy Minella get in Luxembourg?
A.1
B.2
C.3
D.4
Interlude- Brian Williams rapping?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v--znY7yk84
Answer!
Minella represents the worker bee. She didn't have great success, but there is honor in being able to live your dream for 20 years.
(B)2 is wrong, as that is the number of times she was the higher ranked player in her 21 matches. Oddly enough, not only did she lose those matches, she lost both of them 7-6 in 3rd set. 2004 to Krajicek(371/604) and in 2019 to Denisa Satralova(168/247).
(A)1 is also wrong, but represents her MD wins after beating Gracheva.
(C)3 is also wrong, but the number of German players she beat. She played 7! That leaves (D)4 as correct.
5 On the Up Side. Ostrava is a 500, so here we go into the homestretch.
1.Sakkari- Has done almost everything this year but win. Or reach a final. 0-5 in SF this year, she is one of 3 Top 20 players, along with Rybakina and Kenin not to have reached a final. Maybe this week is the week.
2.Kvitova- 2018 Prague winner has a chance to add another home notch. Has a potentially interesting match with Badosa. If she makes it through that, should be a good week.
3.Bencic- Won the Olympics, has reached QF in last 3 events. Why not 4?
4.Swiatek- The great unknown. Uncharted territory for Swiatek. What do I mean? In 2018, she ended her season in early Sept. in an ITF on clay. In 2019, the US Open was her last event. 2020? Roland Garros, meaning her last event on hard was the US Open. So what will she do in her first fall swing?
5.Tauson- One reason that she was one of the favorites in Luxembourg, was that you figured that she felt that she wasn't far off. The person she beat to win her junior slam reached the US Open final. The person she just beat in a 125K final won the whole thing. That should have, and did, light a fire under her.
5 On the Down Side.
1.Kenin- As mentioned, she is 1 of 3 Top 20 players not to have reached a final this year. However, she is on this list because she is the only one not to have reached a SF. Massively overranked, though she will drop to around 13 once her 2020 French Open points drop, her only QF this year are Abu Dhabi and Yarra Valley. Or to be more blunt, wins before appendix-6, after appendix-5. Will she even play the rest of 2021.
2.Riske- Had a great week, so this really isn't about her, but what she represents. As of now, she is the only American in Ostrava's MD. If she pulls out, it would be the 6th event this year without one. Lyon, St. Petersburg, Belgrade, Cluj-Napoca, Luxembourg are the others.
3.Hsieh- Officially, we knew it was coming, so after being #1 for one week, her Rome points fell off and she drops to #4, with her partner Mertens retaking the top spot. Someone else that we don't know how much we will see down the stretch.
4.Zhang- Even Mladenovic skipped Ostrava. She skipped the Olympics, and has played every week since, going from San Jose, Montreal, Cincinnati, Chi/Cle, US Open, Luxembourg, Ostrava. Oddly enough, Cirstea has a 6 week stretch, as she skipped Romania.
5.Pavlyuchenkova- Went up to 13, so ties her career high from 10 years ago. Does she have enough to reach the finals? Monterrey star might be the favorite in Guadalajara. The red flag? She is in Ostrava. Will she skip Chicago and IW? Can she get back in?
I really liked watching Tauson at the Charleston 250. She beat Samsanova and Tomljanovic, but then had to retire in the quarterfinals. She was also a pleasure to have in press, but then, that whole group (Kovinic, Jabeur, Sharma, Fruhvirtova, Osorio Serrano) was.
C-
Fixed Alexandrova as the *#3*-ranked RUS in the Samsonova section (as well as AO having her maiden slam MD win, not debut). Grrr.
I guess Venus might be seeing a few of those WC in the near future.
Quiz: guessed 4 and got it right. :)
*#4* (sigh)
Hmmm...
Cahill: Goodbye, Simo (sniff, sniff). It's been lovely.
(dials phone)
Cahill: Yes, hello? Is Emma there?
