A German, a Czech and a Bracelet (and other RG Qualifying Tales)

A look back at the Roland Garros qualifying rounds in Melbourne...

*TOP Q-PLAYERS*

1. Jule Niemeier, GER (22, #103) ...after falling the final round of qualifying in two (WI/AO) of the last three majors, the #2-seed finally leads the next generation of German stars into her first slam MD. Doing her best Iga impression, Niemeier dropped just seven total games through three matches.

===============================================
2. Aleksandra Krunic, SRB (29, #117) ...the #13-seeded Bracelet qualified for her second straight RG, going three sets twice and staging a comeback from 6-3/4-1 in her second match vs. Grace Min, with the Bannerette serving for the match in the 2nd and taking a break lead in the 3rd after a love break in game #5. Krunic, whose last slam MD win came in Paris in '19, finished off her run with a straight sets win over #20 Reka-Luca Jani (who'd been seeking her first slam MD appearance in eleven years, but still cleared the hurdle as a LL).

===============================================
3. Olga Danilovic, SRB (21, #174) ...Danilovic didn't sweep through qualifying in reaching her third slam MD since the start of last year (she posted 1st Rd. AO/US wins in '21), but kept up a winning level of fight through *all* three rounds, a run befitting a player who won her only tour singles title as a lucky loser in Moscow in 2018. In the Q1, the Serb rallied from 3-1 down in the 3rd to defeat #23 seed Rebeka Masarova, then came back from a break down in the 3rd to knock off Simona Waltert in her next match. With a MD spot on the line, once again her staged a comeback, taking out #10 Viktoriya Tomova after falling down a break (4-3) in the 3rd.

===============================================
4. Hailey Baptiste, USA (20, #125) ...Backspin's 2022 AO qualifying Player of the Week makes it two straight majors (and two RG in a row) with successful Q-runs. The Bannerette trailied Aussie Olivia Gadecki 3-0 in the 3rd set in her opening match. Down 5-4 on serve, Baptiste held in a deuce game and swept the final three games. It proved to be the first of back-to-back-to-back three-set wins, the final two coming over Julia Grabher and Nastasja Schunk. Baptiste reached the 2nd Round last year in Paris (def. Anna Blinkova), as well as at this year's AO (def. Caroline Garcia).

===============================================
5. Fernanda Contreras, MEX (24, #224) ...just two years after Renata Zarazua (at RG) became the first Mexican woman in a slam singles MD in twenty years, Contreras authored her own breakthrough in Paris, reaching the MD in her first slam qualifying attempt. The former Vanderbilt player went the distance in all three of her qualifying matches, defeating Caty McNally (10-8 TB), Ipek Oz and Joanne Züger in three sets.

===============================================
HM- Linda Noskova, CZE (17, #185) ...leading the new Crush of Czechs' charge into the majors, posting an opening round win over #11-seeded Anna Blinkova and then moving on from there, the teenager will be the youngest player in the women's MD. Noskova takes the big step of her maiden slam MD appearance one year after winning the RG girls singles crown.

===============================================

*OTHER RG QUALIFIERS*

Irina Bara, ROU (27/#114) - Bara has now qualified at three straight RG, where three of her four career slam MP appearances have taken place. The other was at this year's AO as a lucky loser.

Mirjam Bjorklund, SWE (23/#150) - the Swede fell in the Q3 in her only other slam qualifying attempt this January in Melbourne, but she breezed through in Paris without dropping a set and will make her slam MD debut.

Ysaline Bonaventure, BEL (27/#170) - the Belgian completes the career slam set with her first RG MD appearance, though this one only came after rallying from 5-3 down in the 3rd in the opening Q-round vs. Despina Papamichail.

Cristina Bucsa, ESP (24/#127) - Bucsa qualifies at a third straight slam, and will once again seek her maiden MD victory in a major.

Valentini Grammatikopoulou, GRE (25/#188) - the "other" Greek in the women's draw made the U.S. Open 2nd Round as a qualifier last summer, and will get the chance to do the same with her RG debut.

Rebecca Marino, CAN (31/#116) - dropping just 12 total games in three matches, Marino successfully made it through qualifying at her third consecutive slam. This will be her first RG MD appearance since 2011.

Oksana Selekhmeteva, RUS (19/#198) - the teenager won the girls' doubles (w/ Alex Eala) last spring at Roland Garros, and will now make her slam MD women's singles debut.

Lesia Tsurenko, UKR (32/#121) - with her training Ukraine-based, Tsurenko was recently "stranded" abroad when the war started in her homeland. With a history of moderate success in Paris (4r '18, 3r '19), she qualified for her second straight major in '22.

Donna Vekic, CRO (25/#101) - having made a Round of 16 run in Paris three years ago, Vekic will now play in her 21st consecutive slam MD. She had to traverse two three-setters to reach this one, including winning (from 5-3 down in the 3rd vs. #3-seeded Louisa Chirico) while cramping down the stretch in the Q2.

Zhu Lin, CHN (28/#99) - #3-seeded Zhu didn't drop a set through qualifying, but still has yet to win a MD match in Paris (0-2), the only major where she's yet to do so.

Harmony Tan, FRA (24) - her fourth straight RG wild card. Tan posted her maiden slam MD win last year in Paris.

Katie Volynets, USA (20) - Volynets has been a qualifier (WI/AO) or wild card (US/RG) at the last four majors. She won her second career $100K crown last month, but is 0-4 in opening round matches in slams.

RG Q1 - Olga Danilovic def. #23 Rebeka Masaova 3-6/7-6(7)/6-4
...Danilovic's successful Q-run started with her comeback her from 3-1 down in the 3rd set. Masarova was the 2016 RG girls' champ, defeating Amanda Anisimova in the final.

Anisimova has since reached the semis in Paris (2019), but Masarova has yet to make her MD RG debut. This was the Spaniard's first ever women's qualifying match in the event.
===============================================
RG Q1 - #17 Hailey Baptiste def. Olivia Gadecki 5-7/6-3/7-5
...after missing the AO due to not being vaccinated, Aussie Gadecki finally makes her '22 slam debut. She let Baptiste 3-0 in the 3rd.
===============================================
RG Q1 - Nastasja Schunk def. #16 Laura Pigossi 7-5/3-6/6-3
...Pigossi, 27, reached the Bogota final this spring as a qualifier, but falls out in her first match in her attempt to reach her maiden slam MD. Schunk was a Wimbledon girls finalist last year.
===============================================
RG Q2 - Anastasia Kulikova def. #1 Anastasia Potapova 5-7/7-6(5)/6-3

===============================================
RG Q2 - Viktoria Kuzmova def. Linda Fruhvirtova 7-5/3-6/7-5
...Fruhvirtova fails in her attempt to be the first of the Crush to reach a slam MD (Noskova got the honors).
===============================================
RG Q2 - #10 Viktoriya Tomova def. Marina Melnikova 2-6/7-5/6-0

===============================================
RG Q2 - #14 Lesia Tsurenko def. Sara Errani 6-1/6-2
...Errani had a RU-SF-QF-QF run in Paris from 2012-15, but has since gone 2-4 in the MD in Paris and had a pair of Q2 defeats.
===============================================

Konjuh pulled out, Schunk in as LL.

Might as well get this out of the way first: Wimbledon offering no points will make for a very weird Wimbledon. They will offer points for the other banned events in Nottingham, Birmingham and Eastbourne, since Den Bosh, Berlin and Bad Homburg are options.

Entry list should have already been out, 26 players are projected to be banned-for now.

No Belarus or Russian player played all 4 UK events last year. Sabalenka played 2, but has the biggest point loss at 880. Kasatkina played 3(350) and Melnikova played 3, both MD and Q, for a miniscule 30.

Guadalajara 1000 that was rumored has been announced. Needed with Wuhan and Beijing off the schedule, and IW back in it's regular spot. San Diego gets 500, Tunisia gets 250, and the one we have been hoping for finally shows up- Estonia 250.

Now I need to get Buenos Aires back on. They had one in the 70's.

Your Week 18 post last year had this nugget: Marcinko vs Berberovic in a 15K doubles final.

Bronzetti/Parrizas Diaz may have been the best match of the week. Not angry if you think Kerber/Juvan.

Mertens/Friedsam match should have been sponsored by Lotto. Same outfit, same color, complete with matching visor.

2024 Olympic notes are already out, mainly because the 2022 Asian Games winner will get a spot. The one difference for this, plus the 2023 Pan Am Games and the 2023 African Games, is that the criteria to keep spot drops to 400 from 300.

10 On the Up Side- The Big Bad Edition.

1.Swiatek- She's human, so anything can happen. Heavy favorite. The things that could stop her? Weather. Not really the first week, but if the event backs up in the second week, fatigue might be an issue. The other? The French Open is where streaks go to die. Martina won 36 in a row, lost here, then won another 50. Venus' 35 match streak didn't end here, but started immediately after her 2000 RG loss. Serena kept her 2016 streak though RG, losing at Wimbledon. What? If she wins it, she will have earned it.
2.Rybakina- With 6 first time winners in a row here, and no final between 2 players with a slam title here since Sharapova/Williams in 2013, why not a young starlet who might be ready for her closeup? In a softer section than others.
3.Teichmann- Her slam history is weak, and retiring from her last match doesn't help. But in the 4th qtr, aka the one expected to fall apart like wet Charmin, why not Jil. Pliskova's history wasn't much better when she made her first slam final.
4.Anisimova- 2019 SF has a risky match with Osaka, and fights her own brand of inconsistency on court. But if she wins the only match expected to be better than Bouzkova/Davis, she could go far. If you think that was a throwaway line, Davis hasn't reached the 3rd in 9 attempts, while Bouzkova is winless here. They are hungry.
5.Pegula- Bad draw, but deserves notice. While others have had a good month, she has been solid all year.
6.Lepchenko- NHL fans remember when Andrew Cogliano had his 830 consecutive game streak end due to suspension. One of the under the radar streaks will end because of Lepchenko's suspension, as she has been in the draw 13 straight years. With her suspension ending when she turns 39, that was probably the last we will see of her. Venus' 10 year streak ends, but Cornet makes it 18 in a row, and 61 in a row overall.
7.Paquet- She's lost 5 in a row here, why is she on this list? Well, so have Golubic and Rus, plus Doi is at 6. No, she's here because after wasting a WC for the last 5 years, she got in directly once Vondrousova pulled out. Ranked 102, she should be last in Wimbledon even if ban is lifted.
8.Andreescu- Doesn't have a great draw, plus has never been to the 3rd rd of a slam outside of New York. Getting matches here can help next month.
9.Pavlyuchenkova- Gamed the system. Actually, she utilized her rank so she won't have to rush back. With her being banned from Wimbledon, instead of playing RG and having her ranking near 80, she starts the break ranked 21. Will help her PR. Also think she did this because she doesn't have to rush back to play Moscow. That event is not on the schedule, one that she has played 13 times.
10.Kalinina- If there is anyone that deserved a seed, it is Kalinina. Barring a late pullout, she will be first one out, making it the first time since 2014 USO that Ukraine will not have one. That is mostly due to Svitolina, but when she missed the pandemic slam(USO 2020), Yastremska kept the streak going.

10 On the Down Side.

1.Krejcikova- What will she bring to the table? Actually less about her ranking, and more about creating history. Barty did it last year, and Serena multiple times. What was it? Winning Wimbledon without playing a match on grass. Clay is different, and in the Open Era, there has never been a player that played zero matches on clay and won this event. Weirdly enough, we have had a woman win 0 matches and walk away with the title. Of course, we needed a pandemic to do it, as Swiatek lost her one and only match before winning 7 in 2020. Closest comparison? Hingis winning Hilton Head on clay in 1997, then missing 2 months and reaching RG final. Krejcikova should be so lucky.
2.Kerber- Won Strasbourg, but still need to keep her here. Has lost in the 1st rd here 5 of last 6 years. Had a 6 match losing streak before Strasbourg. Silver lining is that isn't much different from last year, as she had more wins on grass- 10, than clay-4.
3.Muguruza- Continuing the trend of slumping former slam winners, she's been bad, so bad, really, really, bad. No back to back wins since Doha, and doesn't have a Top 30 win all season.
4.Ostapenko- Ice, Ice, baby. And you thought I was going to say slumping former slam winner. SF in Doha, won Dubai, then the wheels came off. Lost 5 in a row and no good reason for it.
5.Stephens- Cold as ice. Won Guadalajara, has gone 1-6 since, which means 0 wins on clay.
6.Zheng- Phenom beat Stephens, then retired in her next match. Only 1-2 on clay this year, still not 100%, so breakout on clay will come next year.
7.Giorgi- Stone cold. Managed to win 2 BJK Cup matches but has lost 7 WTA level matches in a row. So no surprise that she is the only Top 30 player here without a QF this season. The other is injured Pavlyuchenkova, who I hope to see in 2023.
8.Kontaveit- Looked great until she got sick at IW, has gone 2-4 since. The thing that sticks out here, is that she is one of 6 Top 20 players that has not reached the QF here. This is Raducanu's debut, the others are Jabeur, Sabalenka, Pegula, Bencic.
9.Vondrousova- Remember when often injured Karin Knapp won back to back BJK Cup matches, then went 2-9 immediately after? She did turn it around, winning 25 matches and Tashkent to close the season. Marketa won 3 BJK Cup matches and hasn't played since. Here's hoping she can turn it around.
10.Mertens- Got a seed due to a late withdrawal. Admittedly I was going to put Cirstea here as she is on a 4 match losing streak, but she has a decent draw. Mertens is 3rd or 4th rd here every year, and there is not a reason to expect anything different.

Mexico has really been a godsend for the tour. And, right on cue, Mexican players are making inroads. Olmos (w/ Zarazua and Zacarias), and now Contreras. After getting that prediction of a Mexican woman in a slam MD checked off two years ago, I'm still waiting for a major with *two* to happen. Contreras might make it possible now. ;)

Here's something not said often: I'm happy to have Pam Shriver on my side in this. ;) (Of course, I'm talking about her backing a rule to prevent those dressed-alike match-ups from happening.)

Only thing about those streaks ending in Paris: clay was the worst surface for Martina and Serena (and Venus, too, for that matter). Not so much for Iga. :)
