RG.Q - Mirra Mirra on the Wall

A look back at the Roland Garros qualifying rounds...

*TOP Q-PLAYERS*

1. Mirra Andreeva, RUS (16, #143) ...the youngest player in the women's draw, Andreeva has been on fire since losing the junior final in Melbourne, going 20-2 vs. pro competition while winning a pair of $60K challenger titles, reaching the Madrid 1000 Round of 16 and now earning her slam MD debut.

This week, she knocked off 31-seeded Polina Kudermetova, Emiliana Arango and #1 seed Camila Osorio without dropping a set.

===============================================
2. Clara Tauson, DEN (29, #126) ...two years ago as a RG qualifier, Tauson made her slam MD debut and upset #21-seeded Jennifer Brady in one of the most dynamic big stage intros of recent years. After suffering through an injury-plagued '22 the Dane slipped as low as #140 in October, then picked up a foot injury that cost her a spot at the AO. She also was forced to part with her long-time coach because of a lack of finances after what was almost a "lost" season before an eleventh hour 16-4 run in challenger events from October-December.

In Paris, Tauson followed up wins over Katie Swan and Petra Marcinko with a three-hour win over Mirjam Bjorklund to reach the MD.

===============================================
3. Olga Danilovic, SRB (22, #104) ...Danilovic carried over her momentum from her $100K challenger win in Madrid last week, her biggest title in five years, by extending her winning streak to eight matches with qualifying victories over Heather Watson, Yanina Wickmayer and Erika Andreeva (Mirra's older sis).

The Serb has won all three of her career 1st Rd. slam matches (she opens vs. Kateryna Baindl).

===============================================
4. Dayana Yastremska, UKR (23, #144) ...wins over Alexandra Cadantu-Ignatik, Sachia Vikery and Greet Minnen give Yastemska a shot to end her seven-match slam MD losing streak (her last win was at the 2020 U.S.).

In 2019, she picked up 7 of her 9 career major wins (3r-1r-4r-3r).
===============================================
5. Storm Hunter, AUS (28, #202) ...a Top 5 doubles player, but just #202 in singles, Hunter has ridden her BJK Cup Finals heroics to '23 solo success, winning a $60K crown, reaching a $100K QF and qualifying in Miami and now for RG.

Wins over #8 Viktorija Golubic, Mona Barthel and Ashlyn Krueger without dropping a set has gotten the Aussie into her third non-AO (where she's been in 5) slam MD. So far she's 0-7.
===============================================
HM- Iryna Shymanovich, BLR (25, #211) ...after finally cracking the singles Top 200 last month, and reaching her first tour-level doubles final (and winning it) in Bogota, Shymanovich makes her slam MD debut after posting wins over Joanna Garland, Kenin-conquerer Margaux Rouvroy and Mai Hontama (in a 10-4 MTB).

In 2013, the Belarusian reached the Wimbledon girls' doubles final alongside Anhelina Kalinina (who I suppose wouldn't even shake her hand if they played now), losing to some Czech duo named Krejicikova & Siniakova. Kalinina/Shymanovich also won the Youth Olympic Gold in 2014.

===============================================

*OTHER RG QUALIFIERS*

Sara Bejlek, CZE (17/#180) - three straight successful slam qualifying runs

Kayla Day, USA (23/#138) - the '16 U.S. Open junior champ's last slam MD appearance was in New York in 2017

Fiona Ferro, FRA (26/#462) - the only Q-wild card to reach the MD, the former tour champ (2 titles in 2019-20) with a 4r run in Paris (2020) is working her way back from a trying '22 that saw her struggle on the court and off it file sexual assault charges against her former coach

Brenda Fruhvirtova, CZE (16/#146) - back-to-back slam qualifying runs to become the second-youngest player (behind M.Andreeva by a just a few weeks) in the MD. Four of the five youngest -- Bejlek, both Fruhvirtovas and Noskova -- in the women's draw are Czechs.

Ylena In-Albon, SUI (24/#148) - one of two Swiss qualifiers making their RG debut in '23

Elli Mandlik, USA (22/#118) - Mandlik, whose mother Hana is a former RG champ (1981), makes her third straight slam MD debut (as a U.S. WC, then an AO LL)

Arantxa Rus, NED (32/#113) - her last RG MD win came during a 4th Rd. run in 2012 (she's gone 0-5 in the MD in Paris since, has ten straight slam losses and is 1-17 in her last 18 1st Rounds in majors)

Taylor Townsend, USA (27/#108) - continues her hot, post-maternity leave comeback spring, which has included a Rome 3rd Round result, 125 final and win over #3 Pegula

Simona Waltert, SUI (22/#127) - so there *is* a Simona in the women's MD, as Waltert makes her slam debut after coming up short in six previous major qualifying attempts

Tamara Zidansek, SLO (25/#110) - a semifinalist in 2021 and with a 3rd Round run last year, accounting for 7 of her 12 career MD win in majors

*RG LUCKY LOSERS (as of May 26)*

Aliona Bolsova, ESP (25/#131) - reached the 4th Rd. in the slam debut in Paris in '19

Elina Avanesyan, RUS (20/#134) - making it 13 Hordettes in the MD, behind only the U.S. total of 19 (there are 12 Czechs, and 10 Pastries)

Nao Hibino, JPN (28/#112) - lost in the Q3 for her fifth slam in a row, but reaches the MD in Paris (making it as a LL for the second time in the stretch)

Viktoria Hruncakova, SVK (25/#136) - (née Kuzmova) her best slam result was a RG 3rd Rd. in 2019

RG Q1 - (WC) Margaux Rouvroy def. #23 Sofia Kenin 6-4/6-3
...a week after a 3rd Round run in Rome that included a win over Aryna Sabalenka, 2020 RG finalist Kenin goes down in flames vs. the #278-ranked wild card Pastry in Rouvroy's slam qualifying debut.

Rouvroy lost in the Q2 in two TB sets vs. Iryna Shymanovich.

===============================================
RG Q1 - (PR) Sesil Karatantcheva def. Fernanda Contreras 3-6/6-1/6-3
...Karatantcheva posts her first singles win of any kind in four years, and her first in a slam event since the 2015 RG. The 33-year old Bulgarian reached the QF in Paris at age 15 back in 2005. She returned to action for the first time since 2019 earlier this spring, after having become a mother in '21 and established her own tennis academy in Sofia.

Karatantcheva lost to top-seeded Camila Osorio a round later.

===============================================
RG Q1 - Mirra Andreeva def. Polina Kudermetova 6-1/6-4
...Hordette sister vs. Hordette sister, but they aren't each other's sister.
===============================================
RG Q1 - #29 Brenda Fruhvirtova def. Antonia Ruzic 3-6/6-2/7-6(10)
...the younger Fruhvirtova (who'd ultimately qualify) barely escaped the opening round, as the 16-year old lost a 4-1 3rd set lead and saw Ruzic serve for the match at 6-5. Things went to a MTB, where Ruzic held a MP at 9-6. Fruhvirtova ultimately won on her own second MP.
===============================================
RG Q1 - (PR) Polona Hercog def. Harmony Tan 5-7/6-0/7-6(4)
...Hercog squandered a 4-1 lead (and served at 5-4) in the 1st, and later had to save two Tan MP at 6-5 in the 3rd. The Slovenian took the match in a MTB.

Tan, of course, handed Serena Williams her final Wimbledon defeat last summer in the 1st Round at SW19 en route to a Round of 16 finish. She's recorded no slam MD wins since, falling in the 1r, Q1 and Q1 in the last three majors.
===============================================
RG Q2 - Maria Timofeeva def. (PR) Maja Chwalinska 1-6/6-2/6-2
...on her way back from injury, young Pole Chwalinska knocked off #2-seed Lucrezia Stefanina 2 & 1 in the opening round. She fell to the Hordette here, but I'm including this match on this list mostly due to Timofeeva's outfit.

===============================================
RG Q2 - #21 Ylena In-Albon def. (PR) Francesa Jones 4-1 ret.
...Jones hadn't competed in any slam competition since the '22 AO (Q1), as multiple injuries (elbow, foot and nerve) kept her out for a full year. The Brit fell as low as the #800s, but upon her return reached the Bogota semis earlier this spring. She entered Paris at #316 and got a Q1 win over CoCo Vandeweghe, only to see a shoulder injury take her out less than a set into her next match.

===============================================
RG Q3 - #26 Kayla Day def. #16 Elina Avanesyan 5-7/6-4/7-6(7)
...Avanesyan rallied from 4-2 back to win the 1st, but failed to serve out the win at 5-3, 30/30 in the 3rd. The Hordette took a 4-1 MTB lead, but saw Day wrap up her first slam berth since 2017 on her third MP. No matter, Avanesyan got in as a lucky loser.

===============================================
RG Q3 - #10 Elli Mandlik def. #22 Laura Pigossi 6-2/2-6/7-5
...the Brazilian was up a break at 4-3 in the 3rd, but fell in Paris qualifying for the second straight year.
===============================================
RG Q3 - #29 Brenda Fruhvirtova def. Alice Robbe 6-3/6-0
RG Q3 - Sara Bejlek def. #19 Viktoria Hruncakova 6-4/6-4
...Fruhvirtova and Bejlek are the sixth and seventh teens to enter the RG main draw. After youngest-in-play Mirra Andreeva, the next four youngest are all, not surprising, members of the Crush of Czechs.

You know how we talk about Jimenez Kasintseva possibly getting a BJK Cup team for Andorra? Burundi played their first match in 2022. Sada Nahimana and Laura Syori(Southern U.) are their history.

First time winner guaranteed in Rabat.

Riera-Sherif played a 74 minute set. It ended 7-5 Riera.

8 Q/LL are favored to reach 2nd rd.

Brady withdrew. Not on Wimbledon entry list, which does have Strycova, Saville, Sorribes Tormo, Cristian, Betova.

10 On the Up Side- Expecting Chaos Edition.

1.Krejcikova- Ruben Patterson was known as the "Kobe Stopper." Is Krejcikova the "Iga Stopper?" Not playing as well as expected, the early meeting could open up the door for the 2021 RG winner to win her second trophy.
2.Wang Xiyu- There has not been a Chinese woman to reach the QF here since Li did en route to winning the event in 2011. Wang and Zheng will fight for that honor, with Wang showing growth even though her ranking has dropped from the beginning of the season.
3.Vekic- Slight darkhorse having a career year. The red flag may be that she has not reached a QF on clay since Stuttgart in 2019, when she lost to #1 Osaka.
4.Bogdan- Her only back to back wins this season were in Dubai. So not who you think would be on this list, but with Linette, Maria and Trevisan reaching slam SF in the last year, why not someone who puts up their best results on clay- 2022 Warsaw-F, 2022 Parma-SF.
5.Maria/Rabat/Strasbourg winner- I'm cheating, but even if you don't believe in Maria, who hasn't made it past the 2nd rd here in 8 attempts, know this. 6 times in the last 10 years(2013 Errani, 2014 Bouchard, 2016 Bertens, 2019 Anisimova, 2021 Krejcikova, 2022 Trevisan) a player has won a 250 on clay that season and been SF or better at RG, capped by Krejcikova winning it all in 2021.
6.Swiatek- Injury drops her from prohibitive favorite to question mark. Draw doesn't help. 12-2 on clay this year, 2022 and 2022 champ goes for her third title.
7.Ostapenko- The 3rd and last of the former winners here, she gets on this list not because of her results, but her style of play. If she makes the second week, she should be in better shape, because with the exception of Iga, she is the only player that can play a set on clay in a half hour.
8.Sabalenka- Madrid winner cannot be discounted. One red flag for her is that the Madrid winner had not won since Williams and Sharapova went back to back in 2013-14.
9.Rybakina- Rome winner has a similar streak. Swiatek did win last year, but before that, it had not happened since Sharapova and Williams went back to back in 2013.
10.Yastremska- Has a poor slam record recently, but continues the trend of Ukraine women coming through qualifying. This follows Tsurenko(22'), Zavatska/Kalinina(21') and Kostyuk(20').

10 On the Down Side.

1.Cornet- With only 1 Top 100 win on the season, is she playing well enough to get a sendoff on Lenglen or Chatrier? Update: Third on Chatrier. 19th RG.
2.Mladenovic- Reaches her 15th MD here with a questionable wild card, until you realize she won doubles just last year. Depending on Siniakova's health, could win again.
3.Fernandez- Has QF points to defend for last year's run, in which she had 2 Top 30 wins. Has gone 1-9 vs that group since, none this year, her best win being #34 Cornet.
4.Zhang- Is she healthy? Missed 7 weeks, only to come back and eat a bagel. Two, in fact. That increases her losing streak to 7. Gets Frech, who has not won a match here since 2018.
5.L.Fruhvirtova- 2-4 on clay, in a sophomore slump that isn't as bad as her numbers suggest. Makes her MD debut here, something she will also do at Wimbledon. Meahwhile, sister Brenda fights with Mirra Andreeva to see who will be the most impressive youngster.
6.Jabeur- Won Charleston before her body gave out. Hasn't won a match since Stuttgart. This is the slam she has struggled at, with her best being the 4th rd twice.
7.Bencic- Got her best win this season in Charleston, defeating #3 Pegula. Has not played since that event, and doesn't have a good RG history, reaching the 3rd rd in 2019 and 2022.
8.Badosa- There is never a "good" spine fracture. Like Kontaveit, played the best tennis of her career, only for her body to fail her. One thing that I have forgotten, is that she also missed the Australian Open.
9.Haddad Maia- Get a seed, get expectations. Hasn't reached the 3rd rd in 11 slams, but that means that it is only her 3rd RG, so maybe she gets into form. If not, it hangs over her head until grass season, though she should be seeded at Wimbledon after both her titles come off. Note:This will happen because RG is played one week later this year.
10.Kanepi- Giant killer ended her 7 match losing streak, but only has one Top 30 win this season. Starts off with #20 Keys.

I'm surprised at the relative mediocrity of Krejcikova's clay season thus far. But there's a fair chance that she'll be "herself" in Paris. If that happens--watch out. When Krejcikova is "on," she has a beautifully complete game that--as we know--gets under Swiatek's skin.

My gut feeling is that Jabeur will be herself in Paris. I consider both of those players contenders.
