Mirra Andreeva, RUS (16/#102) - qualifies for a second a straight slam, where she'll again be the youngest player in the MD Bai Zhuoxuan, CHN (20/#191)# - successfully qualifies for her first slam MD in her maiden attempt. Bai is 10-3 in career ITF finals. Viktorija Golubic, SUI (30/#138) - the veteran reached the SW19 QF in 2021, and is 8-5 in the Wimbledon MD in her career. She's 1-19 in the other three slams. Golubic opened this Q-run with a win over $100K Ilkley champion Mirjam Bjorklund. Viktoria Hruncakova, SVK (25/#127) - after losing in 2021-22 SW19 qualifying, Hruncakova (nee Kuzmova) makes it through with a Q3 win over #3 Clara Tauson. She was 0-2 in MD matches in 2018-19.
Last year, Kaja Juvan made the 3rd round of the main draw

With no points awarded, though, the 22yo had little to stop her ranking free fall as her results slipped
After getting into qualies due to a late withdrawal, Juvan defeats Kraus, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, to return to the main draw pic.twitter.com/zZsMz0ED1h
Kaja Juvan, SLO (22/#241) - at her low ranking since 2017 (after starting '23 at #89, and being at #58 a year ago), Juvan puts together just her second three-match winning streak of the season. She trailed Sinja Kraus by a set and 3-1 in the final round. Greet Minnen, BEL (25/#121) - she lost in '23 AO/RG qualifying after having played in 11 straight slam MD. Her no-sets-lost Q-run makes Minnen 40-12 on all levels in '23. Lucrezia Stefanini, ITA (25/#110) - the Italian's second '23 slam qualification (w/ AO) saw her assure her Wimbledon MD debut after winning a crazy 11-9 deciding tie-break over Hsieh Su-wei in the final round Natalija Stevanovic, SRB (28/#223)# - after falling short in ten previous slam qualifying attempts (w/ eight Q1 losses, and two in the Q3), the Serb reaches her maiden MD without losing a set vs. Grammatikopoulou, #4 Mandlik and #22 Bassols Ribera. Victory has rarely tasted so sweet.

Simona Waltert, SUI (22/#115) - without dropping a set, Waltert qualifies for a second straight slam Yanina Wickmayer, BEL (33/#111) - the Belgian has had quite the intriguing career, from being a slam semifinalist (U.S. '09), the "WICK-mayer" incident, Lyme disease, motherhood, and sitting out all of '21. This is her second straight Wimbledon Q-run, after having been in the MD every year between 2008-19. She won the $100K Surbiton title earlier this month. Yuan Yue, CHN (24/#106) - rallied from 6-3/3-0 down vs. B.Fruhvirtova in the final round. Yuan reached the 3rd Round of the U.S. Open last year.

A streak was guaranteed to end in Aorangi Park as Brenda Fruhvirtova and Sara Bejlek, who've qualified into both previous slams this year, clashed in the first round of qualies

3 Comments:
10 On the Up Side- Venus Rosewater Edition.
1.Garcia- Wimbledon Pick because the big serve that won her the WTA finals should get her some free points here. Perplexing is the fact that even though she has been QF or better at 8 grass events, this is the slam in wich she has not reached the QF.
2.Sabalenka- SF in her last attempt; SF or better in 5 of her last 7 slams. Russia hasn't had a QF since 2018, but Belarus had Sabalenka flying the banner in 21'. Probably the best chance for either country.
3.Swiatek- 2018 junior champ is one of 5(Liu, Potapova, Ostapenko, Bencic) in the field. Showed enough this week to believe that she could go deep in the draw.
4.Ostapenko- 2018 SF has more wins here than in Paris. 8 times since 2011, someone who has won a grass title has reached the Wimbledon QF. Best in that stretch: 2022 Jabeur-F, 2021 Kerber- SF, 2011 Lisicki- SF.
5.Navarro- Has big strong thighs, which should help her drive through the ball on grass. Gets spotlighted as 2021 NCAA champ, as 2022 champ Stearns' illness meant only 2 matches on grass. Only other NCAA champ in field is Collins.
6.Sherif- Has kind of a rough style on grass, but it works for her. Former #1 doubles player at Pepperdine, she could do damage with her non traditional patterns.
7.Marino- Big serve will keep her in the match; lake of movement will prevent a long run. Looking for first main draw win here since 2011, when she defeated Patricia Mayr-Achleitner.
8.Blinkova- Poor draw, but she may be the friendliest player in the game. Not sure if the Karen Krantzcke Award could go to anyone from Russia, but she deserves it. Shows a willingness to try things on grass, including standing 8 ft behind the baseline against Lisicki.
9.Dart- Not a great draw, but her and Boulter get the focus that Raducanu and Konta have gotten in previous years. Will that carry either of them to BJK Cup level play?
10.Kanepi- One last hurrah? Gets Kudermetova, who has had her own struggles here. Banned last year, Kudermetova only has 1 MD win, against Bonaventure in 2019.
10 On the Down Side.
1.Sakkari- You know that match against Venus that showed Sakkari's grass potential? That was 2016, and she hasn't gotten better. Also recent slam losses to Maria and Muchova show that anyone with a slice/yolley are a threat. Has never reached the 4th rd here.
2.Kvitova- Only on this list because of the hype. Just note that this is the 4th year in which she has won a grass event leading up to Wimbledon. She has not reached the QF in any of those years.
3.Sorribes Tormo- On a surface which rewards free points, Sorribes Tormo can't get any. That technically isn't true, as she does have 3 aces in 8 matches here. She has 36 double faults. First round favorite isn't expected to go deep.
4.Pera- 2 time winner on clay is bad on grass. 0-4 at Wimbledon, 2-9 overall, which screams red flags about Bouzkova, as she is one of the 2 victories. Swan is the other.
5.Rybakina- Only on this list because giant killer Cornet is a probable matchup. If she loses, talk about her winning against a weakened field/not being a real champ will come up, even though she is one of the best 3 in the game.
6.Gauff- Here because she is in Iga's section. 0-7 without winning a set, although the very first set went to a tiebreak. Azarenka/Williams ended up lopsided, but Azarenka won their 3rd set played, then won their 3rd match.
7.Collins- Seems like she has been missing in action. That 2022 AO final seems like years ago. Most pressing, is the fact that she only has 2 wins against higher ranked opponents on grass, Suarez Navarro in 2018 and Sevastova in 2019.
8.Zheng Q.- Sophomore slump? Numbers conflict as her unimpressive 2-5 grass numbers have quality losses. This year to high ranked players in Pegula and Kudermetova; 2022 Wimbledon loss to eventual champion Rybakina. Might be the biggest wildcard here.
9.Kalinina- Plays like a right handed Haddad Maia on grass. Results are all over the place, having 3 Top 50 wins on the surface, all at the same event, Eastbourne 2022.
10.Samsonova- I almost put Masarova here, because of a nasty fall at Bad Homburg that leaves Wimbledon in doubt. However, Samsonova is the highest ranked player without a slam QF. Reached 4th rd here in 2021, which is tied with USO 2022 as best slam result. Has seemed on the cusp of something big, but it hasn't happened.
Hmm, you don't have either of my finalists in your list of 10 (they're not "regulars," though one has reached a slam final), but *who knows* what to expect at Wimbledon. Without Serena, almost any combination could be playing from the 4th Rd. on (esp. w/ some questions surrounding a few "favorites" like Petra, Rybakina and Iga).
That Kanepi/Kudermetova 1st Rounder sure *feels* like an "upset" about to happen, doesn't it?
Have to say, I don't dislike the draw for the Venus/Svitolina winner.
