US.Q - Wang Bam, Thank Ya Yafan
China’s Wang Yafan edged Spain’s Marina Bassols Ribera 6-2 and 6-2 in the women’s singles qualifiers final round on Saturday, joining her compatriot Zheng Qinwen, Zhu Lin, Wang Xinyu and Wang Xiyu to play in the 2023 US Open main draw. pic.twitter.com/VA1BeoDor3
— Sports China (@PDChinaSports) August 26, 2023
This will be Wang's first U.S. MD since 2019 and first at any slam since the '21 Wimbledon. 4-12 in career slam MD matches, two of those wins have come in NYC (2016 & '18). She'll face #7 Caroline Garcia in the 1st Round.
All the feels.

WHAT A BATTLE!
— WTARussians (@WTArussians) August 26, 2023
On her Grand Slam debut, 19-year-old Tatiana Prozorova qualifies for the main draw of the US Open with a 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 win over 19th seed Tamara Zidansek after 3h29m.
Was down 5-6 0-40 in the first set and saved a match point in the decider, simply incredible! pic.twitter.com/S8DKCyK5yP
Next up: Wozniacki.
Mirjam Bjorklund, SWE (25/#155) - 0-2 in her slam career, the Swede makes her US debut. She didn't drop a set in qualifying, getting victories over Leolia Jeanjean and Ankita Raina. Olivia Gadecki, AUS (21/#139) - makes her first US MD appearance, and first in any slam on merit after making her belated slam debut at this year's AO (as a WC) after her anti-vax stand prevented her from traveling to the other majors in '22. She knocked off Harmony Tan, Louisa Chirico and #26 Emina Bektas to get there. The Aussie will get first crack at 16-year old Mirra Andreeva in the MD, and likely Coco Gauff if she can get past the Hordette.
Former teenage prodigy Olivia Gadecki will make her US Open debut after successfully qualifying for the season's final major in New York. https://t.co/tiSCIkzMC3

Han Na-lae, KOR (31/#243) - the Korean vet reaches her second career slam MD ('20 AO) with wins over Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva, #8 Lucrezia Stefanini (3rd set TB) and Elli Mandlik. Elsa Jacquemot, FRA (20/#181) - the '20 RG girls' champ makes her US debut, and her first in any slam outside of Paris after failing to qualify at the last five majors (4 w/ Q1 losses). She got there with wins over Jana Cepelova, #2 Diana Shnaider (saving 7 MP!) and former NCAA champ Arianne Hartono. Kaja Juvan, SLO (22/#146) - Juvan has had a tough year on (she was at #244 in July) and off (her father died) court in '23, but has fought back to qualify at the last two slams. This time around, she did it with wins over #29 Laura Pigossi and a pair of relative Japanese newcomers -- 28-year old Haruka Kaji and 22-year old Himeno Sakatsume (saving 5 MP vs. the latter) -- in back-to-back three-setters. While Juvan has recorded quite a few upsets of seeded players in slam play, she's yet to reach a Round of 16. She'll get the chance at another this coming week, as she faces #29 Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the opening round.

Eva Lys, GER (21/#145) - a year after falling one win short of the Open MD, Lys blasts her way into her maiden U.S. 1st Round by dropping just nine total games vs. the likes of CoCo Vandeweghe, #22 Nuria Parrizas Diaz and wild card McCartney Kessler. Greet Minnen, BEL (26/#98) - at #5, Minnen was the highest Q-seed (and the only in the top nine) to successfully win her way through qualifying, defeating Zeynep Sonmez, Sinja Kraus and Katrina Scott. Minnen's best slam result was a 3rd Round in New York in '21. She'll face Venus this time around. Laura Siegemund, GER (35/#108) - Siegemund's summer spurt continues, as the Warsaw finalist (and D.C. WD champ) defeats Nuria Brancaccio, Simona Waltert and #18 Oceane Dodin to reach her second '23 slam MD (AO). Siegemund's 3rd Round in Melbourne in January saw her record her first slam MD victories since reaching the RG QF in 2020. She posted a U.S. Open 3rd Round result in 2016, and will face firecracker-hot Coco Gauff in the 1st Round. Sachia Vickery, USA (28/#203) - after falling in qualifying at the last 12 slams, Vickery will play her first slam MD match since the '20 U.S. Open. She'd lost in the Q3 at the '22 US and '23 AO. This time around, after twice rallying from a set down -- vs. Irene Burillo Escorihuela and #31 Viktorija Golubic -- Vickery was the benefiery of #3 Yanina Wickmayer's Q3 retirement just four games into the 1st set. Katie Volynets, USA (21/#127) - Volynets' second '23 slam Q-run (AO 3r) puts her into her fourth U.S. Open MD since 2019. She got there with an exclusively-NextGen list of qualifying victims: Barbora Palicova (19), Celine Naef (18) and Erika Andreeva (19). Vera Zvonareva, RUS (38/#672) - Zvonareva joins doubles partner Siegemund ('20 US. '22 Miami and '23 Washington champs) with a successful singles qualifying run with wins over Jaimee Fourlis, Despina Papamichail and Moyuka Uchijima. Naturally, Venus Williams will get the most attention for her multi-decade presence at this Open, but Zvonareva made her debut in the event *21* years ago, reaching the 3rd Round.
Into the main draw without dropping a set!
— WTARussians (@WTArussians) August 27, 2023
A fantastic performance from Vera Zvonareva as she stuns Moyuka Uchijima 7-5, 6-3 in the final round of qualifying at the US Open.
3 consecutive straight-set wins over Top 200 oppositions. What a week for Bepa!
[??: Pete Staples/USTA] pic.twitter.com/j82dQXgrP3
Kimberly Birrell, AUS (25/#112) - the Aussie is 3-4 in the AO MD, but has played just one slam MD match ('23 RG 1r) outside of Melbourne. She'll play her second in NYC after being the first of two LL placed in the draw after the close of qualifying on Saturday (she lost in the Q3 to NCAA #1 Fiona Crawley). Yanina Wickmayer, BEL (33/#66) - a U.S. semifinalist in 2009, Wickmayer has had a long, rollercoaster career. Now back after becoming a mother in '21, the Waffle has won a pair of $100K titles (+ a $40K) as she's climbed back into the Top 75. Her last Open MD win was in 2017, but she'll get another chance here despite retiring (vs. Sachia Vickery) just four games (down 3-1) into their Q3 match.

After winning the Easter Bowl last year, then-15yo Valerie Glozman made her pro debut in US Open qualifying, reaching round 2.
This year, the 16yo does it all again.

It was less than a year ago that Glozman and Clervie Ngounoue (w/ Iva Jovic) combined to win the Junior BJK Cup title for the United States. Since then, Ngounoue has won the Wimbledon girls' crown and USTA 18s title (she defeated Glozman in the semis) to earn a WC berth in her maiden slam MD at this Open.

Unlike with the many other instances of post-match snubs at the net, this one was very well-earned. Though she lost in the final Q-round, since that 1st Round match in Madrid the Ukrainian has gone 22-11 (9-2 in her last 11) and won a 125 title; while Bouchard has gone 4-7 and lost in qualifying in five of six events.
And in just 5 points after a crazy resumption, Fiona Crawley has won over Timea Babos to get to Round 3 of qualies.

Two years ago, Emma Raducanu took the court for her US Open qualifying R1 with one clear, bold goal:

2 Comments:
Interesting that you think that Pegula will finally overcome QF barrier.
The current year is an odd year. So, Jabeur and Muchova fit the plot. Since 2015, every odd year (except for 2019) has produced a non-favorite winner.
Maybe the (over) "due" theory will finally work out for Pegula.
