US.13- The Day Before the Day

=DAY 13 NOTES=
...aside from the invitational held during qualifying week, there haven't been any actual trophies handed out at this slam (I mean, except maybe for those that ESPN hands out to itself on occasion).

That changed today.

With some potential almost-history (as in, Katerina Siniakova getting 3/4 of the way to a Career Doubles Slam with a *second* partner) within the grasp of one team in the women's doubles final, Gaby Dabrowski & Erin Routliffe instead decided to change that narrative and make themselves the stars. Again.

The duo claimed the title in New York for the second time in three years with a 6-4/6-4 win over top-seeded Siniakova & Taylor Townsend.

It's Dabrowski's fourth career slam win (2 WD, 2 MX) -- did someone say, "Canadian Summer?" -- while the win also pushed the CAN/NZL pair perhaps to the top of the heap (they're at least in the mix) for the Doubles Team of the Year. Their three '25 titles tie Errani/Paolini for the tour lead, while Routliffe's fourth title puts her alone in first for the most won by any individual doubles player this season. The Kiwi is 4-0 in '25 finals (3-0 w/ Dabrowski).

...three championships were decided in wheelchair action.

First, Li Xiaohui & Wang Ziying continued to cut a path through the wheelchair doubles competition, taking their third major of the season (AO, WI & US... and they were runners-up at RG) with a 6-4/7-6(4) win in the final over Diede de Groot & Zhu Zhenzhen. Before Li & Wang won in Melbourne in January, no Chinese woman had won a wheelchair slam title.

Meanwhile, de Groot's loss means that 2025 is the first season of her career in which she failed to win either a singles or doubles major (she'd won at least one of *both* every year from 2017-24).

In London, Wang doubled up by also winning the Wimbledon singles title, becoming the first Chinese woman to win a singles slam. At the U.S. Open, Li will take her swing at doing the same this weekend after advancing to her first major singles final today with a win over #2 seed Aniek Van Koot.

Li will face #1 Yui Kamiji, whose 6-4/7-5 win on Friday over Wang mean she's reached the singles final at all four majors in the same season for the first time in her career (winning the AO/RG titles). It'll be her 31st career slam singles final, as she goes for title #11 (third in '25, which would tie her career-best total in '17) to further take advantage of de Groot's ongoing comeback from hip surgery.

Kamiji is a two-time U.S. Open champ, last winning in 2017 before de Groot ran off wins in the last six editions of the wheelchair event at Flushing Meadows before falling vs. Kamiji (in a fourth straight match in the series) in the QF this week.

...in the junior wheelchair event, Sabina Czauz became the first Bannerette roller to claim a girls' slam singles title since the very first such competition (this was the seventh) was held at a major at the 2022 U.S. Open. After losing in the AO and RG finals earlier this season, Czauz defeated #2 seeded Belgian Luna Gryp 7-5/6-2 to take the title. Czauz also teamed with Japan's Seira Matsuoka to win the girls' doubles title.

...meanwhile, the junior girls' singles and doubles finals were set, and Waffle Jeline Vandromme remains alive for a title sweep.

#14-seed Vandromme extended her all-level singles winning streak to 22 matches today with a SF victory over #2 Hannah Klugman, while the other remaining Brit in the draw also went out as Swedish qualifier Lea Nilsson added a win over #9-seeded defending champ Mika Stojsavljevic to her earlier victory over top-seeded Julieta Pareja.

The last (and only) Belgian to win the girls' title at the U.S. Open was Kristen Flipkens in 2003, while no Swedish junior has ever won in New York. In fact, the only girls' singles slam champ that Sweden has produced to date was Lena Sandin at RG in 1979.

Vandromme also advanced to the doubles final alongside Lithuanian Laima Vladson, where they'll mean the Kovackova sisters (Alena and Jana) for the title. The Czech siblings, who've won three pro ITF titles together in '25, reached the girls' RG final (a loss) this past spring, though Alena won the '23 Wimbledon title with another Crusher, Laura Samson.
