BV: Second Thoughts, Pt.II

Not wanting to be left out, Tennisrulz.com Head Honcho Pierre Cantin weighs in with his own set of second thoughts to go along with mine:

*RE-PICKED TOP 10*
( ) - preseason prediction
1. Maria Sharapoav(1)... no reason to change, things going as planned as long as she remains healthy.
--------------------------------------
2.
Justine Henin(2)... again, it's been as expected. :)
--------------------------------------
3.
Ana Ivanovic(6)... wow, I've underestimated Ana's progress... she should make it to #3.
--------------------------------------
4.
Jelena Jankovic(10)... Jelena has been keeping up the pace pretty well.
--------------------------------------
5.
Svetlana Kuznetsova(4)... consistent but not taking an extra step.
--------------------------------------
6.
Serena Williams(5)... I knew she would not play a full season... but come on?
--------------------------------------
7.
Vera Zvonareva(-)... Vera is still very much under the radar but gaining points.
--------------------------------------
8.
Nicole Vaidisova(7)... wow, such a disapointment. No idea what's happening. She changed her coach, could it help?
--------------------------------------
9.
Elena Dementieva(-)... steady even with pretty much no serve.
--------------------------------------
10.
Agnieszka Radwanska(-)... very steady progression although lately her wins are not as convincing.

*RE-IMAGINED MAJOR FINALS*
=WTA=
RG: Henin d. Kuznetsova
W: Sharapova d. S.Williams
O: Henin d. Dementieva
US: Sharapova d. Henin
YEC: Henin d. Ivanovic

Well, according to the WTA/ATP Official Guide to Professional Tennis, Serena had eight Tier I titles before this season. Miami made 9, and then Charleston just made 10.

Of course, next season they're not going to be called "Tier I, II..." anymore, and are instead supposedly going to be groupled as "Premier Mandatory," "Premier 5," "Premier" and "International" events or some such nonsense, so who knows how things are going to be accounted for after '08.

According to the Guide, Serena had 28 titles after 2007. Bangalore would be 29, Miami 30 and Charleston 31.

I've noticed that sometimes the website is slightly behind in updating career titles numbers on the bio pages, but not always. I guess it depends on who's in charge of updating things and such.

I always go by the Guide, or at least try to. :)

the match notes from charleston from wtatour.com have her with 10 Tier I titles before winning charleston

Won (10): 2008 Miami, 2007 Miami, 2004 Miami, 2003 Miami, 2002 Miami and Rome, 2001 Berlin, Toronto and Indian Wells, 1999 Indian Wells

+ Charleston = 11

i think the guidebook is wrong...

you should write to them...maybe they'll give you a reward? :)

The 2001 Berlin final was Mauresmo def. Capriati, so Serena didn't win that one and her career Tier I title total does indeed currently stand at ten.

I checked, and her website bio page doesn't list '01 Berlin with her career singles titles, so I guess the page where you're seeing that is the one in error (ah, it's nice to protect my trusty Guide... though I must admit that until this season the ATP side of the Guide failed to include Pat Cash's bio in the grand slam champions section).

Hmmm, now I'm wondering if they're giving Mauresmo credit for winning Berlin '01 on that list. If you want to check, Mauresmo is SUPPOSED to have six career Tier I titles.

(Ah, it's nice to see someplace making a little error like that, and this time it's not ME.) :D
