2007 WTA BSA's

Forty-five weeks of tennis action, 127 editions of WTA Backspin, and over 500 player awards later... it's come to this.

1. Justine Henin, BEL

It's really no contest here, and no other player even deserves to be included in the "contending" group for "Ms. Backspin '07." This season turned out to be Henin's career best, and that's saying something for a player who'd already put together a Hall of Fame resume.

2. Jelena Jankovic, SRB
3. Venus Williams, USA
4. Cara Black & Liezel Huber, ZIM-USA
5. Serena Williams, USA

The other two grand slam singles winners, even if (especially in Serena's case) the rest of their seasons saw quite a few big moments left unclaimed on the court, did enough to merit being in the season's second tier of top players. Jankovic didn't reach a slam final, but she claimed four titles and won more matches than any other player... and that should count for RU status to Henin, a condition she's become quite familiar with over the last two years. Black & Huber were the best, most consistent and healthy doubles team on tour.

6. Ana Ivanovic, SRB
7. Anna Chakvetadze, RUS
8. Svetlana Kuznetsova, RUS

Maybe Ivanovic should be included in the previous group, having reached the Roland Garros final, YEC SF, and defeated Jankovic in what Backspin considers the "Match of the Year" in Los Angeles. But, on the whole, Jankovic's season was epic enough to warrant an advantage. Of course, JJ will have a hard time following up this season in '08, while AnaIvo might be a good bet to do so. Chakvetadze was the best "money" player from Russia this year, and she's yet to lose a tour singles final (6-0). Kuznetsova is higher ranked, and led Team Russia to a Fed Cup title. But she came up small in her other big matches in '07.

9. Maria Sharapova, RUS
10. Lisa Raymond & Samantha Stosur, USA-AUS

Even a bad year for Sharapova is a good one for most other players, or at least enough to warrant a "Ms. Backspin" mention. After all, she did win a Tier I and reached the Oz and YEC finals. If Stosur hadn't battled injuries down the stretch, she and Raymond could have given Black & Huber a run for their money.

11. Daniela Hantuchova, SVK
12. Tatiana Golovin, FRA
HM- Agnes Szavay, HUN

The "Young Stars" division. Hantuchova ended her five year title drought in Indian Wells, then only took seven months to grab title #3 in Linz. Golovin exhibited both Good and Bad Tatiana tendencies in '07, but managed to win her first two career singles crowns. Szavay, too, claimed her first two titles and made a monstrous jump from #207 into the Top 20 over the past year. We saw the "Late Szummer of Szavay" in '07, leading one to wonder if the not-yet-19 year old can extend her roll over the course of an entire szeason in '08. Hmmm... intriguing (hint, hint).

*MATCHES OF THE YEAR*

1. L.A. SF - Ivanovic def. Jankovic
...4-6/6-3/7-5. Down 4-1 in the 3rd set, Ivanovic saves two match points and uses a string of lethally stinging forehands to power past her fellow Serbian Fantastovic.

-----------------------------
2. Australian Open QF - S.Williams def. Peer
...3-6/6-2/8-6. Peer serves for the match at 6-5 in the 3rd, but maybe the best played women's grand slam match of the year results in a "Shalom, Serena" moment.
-----------------------------
3. YEC F - Henin def. Sharapova
...5-7/7-5/6-3. Finally, Henin and Sharapova meet for the first time during the season in 2007's final match. It was worth the wait. Henin saves 14 of 18 break points, and wins on her fifth match point in the 3:24 contest.
-----------------------------
4. Eastbourne F - Henin def. Mauresmo
...7-5/6-7/7-6. In a grass court rematch of the '06 Wimbledon final, Henin remained unbeaten for her career in Eastbourne when Mauresmo fails to close out the match serving at 5-4 in the 3rd.
-----------------------------
5. Australian Open 1st - Sharapova def. Pin
...6-3/4-6/9-7. Under Extreme Heat conditions, and no roof, Sharapova leads 5-0 in the 3rd and physically slams into a brick wall (figuratively, of course). Pin serves for the match at 7-6 to dump the first #1 women's out of the 1st Round in Oz for the first time since '79, but the Supernova manages to win the final eleven points of the 83-minute final set.
-----------------------------
6. Roland Garros 4th - Sharapova def. Schnyder
...3-6/6-4/9-7. Part II of Sharapova's '07 slam tight rope walk. Schnyder served for the match three times, and held match points at 5-4 and 7-6 in the 3rd.
-----------------------------
7. Wimbledon 1st - Schnyder def. Pin
...6-1/4-6/8-6. The two players who failed to take out Sharapova in the previous two slams met in the third, and produced another wild affair. Pin served for the match and held a match point in the 3rd, but a rain delay at 5-4 turned the match in Sneaky's favor.
-----------------------------
8. Fed Cup Final, Match 3 - Kuznetsova def. Schiavone
...4-6/7-5/7-5. The Contessova saves match point in the 2nd, and goes on to win the 2:45 contest and clinch the FC title for Russia.
-----------------------------
9. Paris SF - Petrova def. Mauresmo
...5-7/6-4/7-6. Mauresmo led 4-1 in both the 2nd and 3rd sets, holding a match point in the final set tie-break. But a Petrova net cord shot wasn't put away by Mauresmo, and the Russian stole the match... and went on to claim her only singles title of the season.
-----------------------------
10. Sydney F - Clijsters def. Jankovic
...4-6/7-6/6-4. Jankovic held match point in the 2nd set and twice served for the match. She couldn't close out the Belgian, throwing in three double-faults in the 2nd set tie-break. Clijsters battled back to win what turned out to be her final career title.
-----------------------------
HM- Miami F - S.Williams def. Henin
...0-6/7-5/6-3. Williams' only true shining moment after her win in Melbourne. After losing the first seven games of the match and turning back Henin on two match points, Serena won her second title of the season. Henin would go on to defeat her in the three remaining grand slams of '07.
-----------------------------

*CHOKES/COMEBACKS OF THE YEAR*

1. Fed Cup SF, Match 4 - Schiavone def. Golovin
.....6-4/2-6/7-5. The Frussian Pastry led 5-2 in the 3rd, then came unglued due to the pressure and the raucous Italian crowd. Rather than sending France to the FC final, Golovin allowed the SF to go to a deciding doubles match, which Italy won to take the rubber 3-2.

-----------------------------
2. Chinese tennis officials misinterpret the Fed Cup rules regarding Olympic eligibility, failing to play top players Na Li and Jie Zheng in the Group I 1st Round rubber against Italy. Italy won 5-0.
-----------------------------
3. Australian Open 3rd - Hantuchova def. Harkleroad
....6-7/7-5/6-3. Harkleroad led 7-6/4-0 and served for the match at 5-3 in the 2nd. She also led 3-1 in the 3rd.
-----------------------------
4. Miami 3rd - Henin def. Razzano
....6-2/2-6/7-6. Henin comes from behind three different times in the final set, including a 5-1 deficit and a 5-6, love/30 hole on her own serve.
-----------------------------
5. Wimbledon 4th - Vaidisova def. Mauresmo
....7-6/4-6/6-1. The "old Amelie" resurfaced as, one year after winning SW19, she blew a 5-3 lead in the 1st set, then a 6-3 bulge in the tie-break. After a listless 3rd set, and 14 total double-faults for the match, Mauresmo fired a ball into the stands in frustration once her ouster was official.
-----------------------------
6. Wimbledon 3rd - S.Williams def. Hantuchova
....6-2/6-7/6-2. "The Cramps Match." At 5-5 in the 2nd, Williams fell to the grass in a heap and soon looked to be on her way out with an eventual retirement before a well-timed rain delay six points into the tie-break. Despite appearing to resemble a racehorse limping down the back stretch, Williams eventually took the match.
-----------------------------
7. Wimbledon QF - Ivanovic def. Vaidisova
....4-6/6-2/7-5. Up 5-3 on Ivanovic's serve, and after holding three match points, Vaidisova crumbled on the grand slam stage. The Czech teen topped things off by double-faulting on AnaIvo's second match point.
-----------------------------
8. Beijing F - Szavay def. Jankovic
....6-7/7-5/6-2. The WTA's 2007 marathoner Jankovic led this one 7-6/5-1 before finally running out of gas (pretty much for her season, as it turned out). Szavay seized upon the moment, blitzing Jankovic down the stretch and acing her on match point to win her second title of the season.
-----------------------------
9. Tokyo F - Razzano def. V.Williams
....4-6/7-6/6-4. In the 2:44 match, Venus failed to convert three match points in the 2nd set tie-break and watched Razzano win the second of her back-to-back titles in the span of six days.
-----------------------------
10t. Wimbledon 1st - V.Williams def. Kudryavtseva 2-6/6-3/6-4.
10t. Wimbledon 3rd - V.Williams def. Morigami 6-2/3-6/7-5.
....Venus' two early-round SW19 close calls on Court Two before her title run. Teenager Kudryavtseva led 6-2/2-0 and 3-1 in the 3rd, while veteran Morigami was up 5-3 in the 3rd before a late Venus push wrapped up the match just before rain and wind stopped play.
-----------------------------
HM- Wimbledon 1st - Hingis def. Cavaday
....6-7/7-5/6-0. The 18-year old Brit held two match points, but Hingis passed the test. Unfortunately, she would fail a more important one a few days later... and retired in November while denying that she's ever used cocaine.
-----------------------------

*UPSETS OF THE YEAR*

1. Wimbledon SF - Bartoli def. Henin
....1-6/7-5/6-1. La Trufflette looked to be going out rather meekly to La Petit Taureau before the wind began to flummox Henin, who couldn't respond to Bartoli's angled two-handed shots from both sides. Bartoli credited seeing Pierce Brosnan in the crowd, and not wanting to disappoint him, for her comeback. Henin never lost again in 2007, going 25-0 to close out her season.

-----------------------------
2. US Open 3rd - A.Radwanska def. Sharapova
...1-6/7-5/6-1. With the Polish teen dancing around the service line prior to her serves, Sharapova's top weapon completely fell apart under the pressure of A-Rad's intimidation tactics. She served 12 double-faults and committed 50 unforced errors on her way out the door one year after winning the Open.
-----------------------------
3. Warsaw 2nd - Vakulenko def. Clijsters
...7-6/6-3. Clijsters retired after the match.
-----------------------------
4t. Berlin 3rd - Vakulenko def. Mauresmo 2-6/6-1/6-2.
4t. Berlin QF - Vakulenko def. Safina 6-3/5-7/6-3.
...The Ukrainian's abilities sparked quite a bit in '07, but were often followed up by poorly-timed injuries. She defeated Mauresmo and Safina on the SAME DAY in Berlin. She ended up retiring from both this event and Warsaw, as well, but ended the season at a career-high in the rankings.
-----------------------------
5t. Istanbul 2nd - Rezai def. V.Williams 6-4/6-4.
5t. Istanbul SF - Rezai def. Sharapova 6-2/6-4.
...the French teen called these wins "the fruit of (her) work."
-----------------------------
6. Roland Garros Jr. SF - Duque Marino def. Pavlyuchenkova
...7-5/6-7/7-5. The unseeded Colombian took out the #1-seeded Russian, further proving that it was time for the latest promising Hordette to make a go at things on the big tour.
-----------------------------
7. Wimbledon 3rd - Granville def. Hingis
...6-4/6-2. And then the Swiss Miss tested positive for cocaine after the match. Or did she?
-----------------------------
8. Toronto 2nd - Yan def. Ivanovic
...6-3/6-1. In a season of mostly disappointing results for the Chinese a year before the Beijing Olympics, Yan managed to pull a few big upsets out of her racquet bag.
-----------------------------
9. US Open Jr. QF - Kucova def. Pavlyuchenkova
...7-5/6-1. The #1 seed goes down again.
-----------------------------
10. US Open Jr. F - Kucova def. U.Radwanska
...3-6/6-1/7-6. And the #2 seed goes out, too. No one could claim the Slovakian took the easy road to her surprise Girls slam title.
-----------------------------
HM- Tokyo F - Razzano def. V.Williams
...4-6/7-6/6-4. This one seemed to be the lock-of-locks for Venus, until it wasn't.
