And here we go. Barty will be #1 no matter what. But 8 women could leave as #2. On the other hand, since Dabrowski and Xu both reached the final this week, 8 women have a chance to reach #1 in doubles.
10 On the Up Side.
1.Ka.Pliskova- Brisbane winner reached SF last year, and has equaled or bettered her previous best here 9 years running. In the 4th qtr, which is not as messy as some others.
2.Keys- Won more matches before AO than she has done since 2013. Courts play to her style. Possible fun matchup with Kvitova.
3.Osaka- On form, has won before, but is in the Group of Death. Venus, Coco, Naomi, Caroline, and Serena? If she goes back to back, most likely that she will have beat the last woman to have done so in Serena.
4.Ostapenko- No match play, but expecting the weirdness to come from Halep's quarter. Why? See below.
5.Brady- 51/49 match vs Halep, and i'm riding Brady. Has a similar game to Kanepi, who is always a threat to Halep. Seems ready for a 3rd or 4th rd next week.
6.Siegemund- Only for a round. Her version of Sharapova/Williams. 0-5 vs Vandeweghe, but Coco only has 1 WTA MD win since the beginning of 2019-Bouzkova. Her best chance to get win #1.
7.Muguruza- Liked this pick more before she offered her normal January walkover or retirement. Not at her pear, but looks like a more engaged player this season.
8.Rybakina- Bad draw, but this time next year will be making history. By then, she would be seeded here for the 2nd time, which a Kazakh has never done. Putintseva-2017, Diyas-2015, and Shvedova-2013 are the others.
9.Vondrousova- Looked better in warmup event than expected. R16 looks doable. Can compare her to Andreescu in that she kept good form. Like Bianca in the last year, has also missed a slam, entered another one compromised, and reached a slam final.
10.S.Williams- Draw does her no favors, but is in the best form here since she won in 2017. And as confident as she says she is, actually winning a title validates her beliefs. Her daughter Osaka would be the favorite if they meet.
10 On the Down Side.
1.Barty- She may yet win this week, but AO is different. Fed Cup final may have been the blueprint, and a player like Rybakina, who is unafraid to pull the trigger could knock her out. The other thing is the press. Expectations will be high, as she is the first Aussie seeded #1 here since Goolagong Cawley in 1977. Heck, they haven't even had a Top 10 seed since Stosur, who was 9 back in 2013.
2.Stephens- How much space do I have? Something is wrong, period. Opens the year with one lose to a sub-100 player, then followed that up with one to a sub-200 player. On a 4-10 stretch, the weird thing is that normally when she loses, her lack of footwork is the problem. This week, it was the serve, or lack of it, as she lost over 50% of those points to Rodionova. Backhand is terrible right now. Also missing is her aggressiveness. She just seems lost out there.
3.V.Williams- Unseeded, she lives for the big matchups. But with the exception of Serena, this is the worst possible matchup for her. Not a random 15 yr old WC, but a player that already beat her in Gauff. Add in the fact that Venus has already pulled out of 2 tournaments and probably isn't 100 pct, plus the fact that she has lost her first match in 6 of her last 10 events, and this seems like one and done.
4.Sevastova- With older slam winners, you normally say they will walk away within 2 years of that title. On a smaller scale, Sevastova won her home tournament in Jurmala. Has gone 3-8 since. Don't know if it is lack of motivation or just father time, but expectations are low.
5.Kuzmova- Has taken a step back. Seemingly made 50 errors vs Zhu. Slower than a street sweeper. Has nice strokes, but is at the mercy of anybody who makes her move.
6.Osorio Serrano- Lost in Q, has a big upside with the right gameplan and coach. This will be really important for her, as people probably have the wrong impression of her. They see the Colombian flag, and thing she will be great on clay. But her hands are bad, her net play is weak, but she is great from the baseline. There is a reason she won her junior slam on hard.
7.Bouzkova- Unseeded player with the worst draw goes to Bouzkova. Even though she is the type of player that can trouble Osaka, especially if she goes on her second set walkabout, the result should be the same as her match vs Serena, close, but no cigar.
8.Halep- The can opener. She is going to open up the 3rd qtr once she loses, it will be a free for all with a bunch of good players who have had varying degrees of slam success. This is the section to watch.
9.Tomljanovic- Another tough draw. Has only made it past the 2nd rd once out of 21 slams. That seems to be the limit here also.
10.Vekic- Another 51/49 match. Has been slumping since the Riske match, which she hasn't recovered from. This could be great, because both Vekic and Sharapova have had problems closing out matches in recent times. If you are looking for a match with a match point saved, this may be it.
