RG.15- Au Revoir, Paris

The Restart turned the late summer and early fall into an odd, often stunning, and surely unprecedented period in tennis history.

Which players have best handled the unique circumstances?

1. Naomi Osaka, JPN
...a messenger, a two-time U.S. Open winner and a three-time major champ at age 22
2. Iga Swiatek, POL
...after a slow open (2-3) to the Restart, the Pole became the latest GenPDQ talent to break out on the slam stage, rushing through Roland Garros without losing a set at age 19 to win her first major (and first WTA title)
3. Victoria Azarenka, BLR
...the "Vikaissance" is real, as her near-"Gotham Double" came up just one set short, then she carried over her hard court momentum to early clay court success
4. Yui Kamiji, JPN (WC)
...with the Tokyo Paralympics around the corner, she picked up her second '20 wheelchair singles slam in Paris, while coming up a Super-TB short of a three-for-three doubles sweep alongside Jordanne Whiley
5. Simona Halep, ROU
...the Prague/Rome champ was looking suspiciously like a soon-to-be three-time slam champ, then Iga showed up
6. Timea Babos/Kristina Mladenovic, HUN/FRA
...not the most dominant team of '20 (that'd be Rome champs Hsieh/Strycova), but they've won two of the three majors this year, including a successful defense of their RG title
7. Jennifer Brady, USA
...proving that hard work pays off, she entered a new phase of her career by winning Lexington and reaching the semifinals at Flushing Meadows
8. Sofia Kenin, USA
...the AO champ's under-the-radar Round of 16 run in NYC preceded an out-of-nowhere appearance in the RG final -- by far the best clay court run of her career -- that was maybe more impressive (and strategically fascinating) than her title run in Melbourne
9. Tsvetana Pironkova, BUL
...three years removed from the sport, the Bulgarian returned and got back to doing "Pironkova things" (i.e. upsetting seeds in majors) en route to the U.S. Open QF and RG 3rd Rd.
10. Hsieh Su-wei/Barbora Strycova, TPE/CZE
...the most dominant doubles duo of '20, they've been shut out when it comes to majors. But they reunited after a seven-month absense to win their fourth title of the season in Rome
HM- Diede de Groot, NED (WC)
... de Groot's 2020 struggles both preceded and followed the shutdown, but the world's best wheelchair tennis star still managed to win her third straight U.S. Open singles crown and three-peat as the RG doubles champ alongside Aniek Van Koot. Still, it seems like a "disappointment." Based on her history, her standards are just higher than the rest.

Ouch. Ostrava should have a decent field, it is a premier.

11 Top 20 players still in. Swiatek had WC but pulled out. Pliskova, Kvitova, Vondrousova, Muchova in MD, Strycova, Siniakova, Pliskova in Q.

Stat of the Week- 4 - Number of Girls seeds from Wimbledon 2018 in 2020 RG draw.

#3 Gauff
#8 Tauson
#11 Fernandez
#16 Burel

Impressive, as 5 seeds fell in qualifying- Osuigwe, Osorio Serrano, Cocciaretto, McNally, plus Wang Xinyu.

Wait, isn't this about Swiatek. Unseeded because of injury, she best represents that group, which also had Parry and Rakhimova.

Quiz Time!

In terms of WTA wins, which group of girls slam winners has the most?

A. 2013
B. 2015
C. 2014
D. 2010

Answer!

(A)2013 isn't close, but the catch is that it is the only year without 4 slam winners. With only 2 in Bencic and Konjuh. With 5 WTA titles, they are 4th, but only 7 ITF titles leaves them last.

(B)2015 is also wrong. In the past, I have claimed that this group was not successful. That is true on the WTA side with no titles, but 28 ITF titles for this group(Mihalikova,Badosa,Zhuk,Galfi) puts them 4th on that side.

(C) 2014 tied for the most ITF wins with 33. With 2011(Barty's year). Kasatkina, Ostapenko, Bouzkova cleaned up, but their 5 WTA wins are less than 2011's 8, though Barty has all 8.

The obvious choice was (D)2010, as both Ka.Pliskova and Svitolina alone have more wins by themselves than any year has as a group. Add Kr.Pliskova and Gavrilova, and you have 33 WTA titles and 29 ITF titles. But no slam.

Catching up on comments again, so there's something in the section on the other (post-women's final) post, too. ;)

C-
I didn't mean that as a shot against anyone, but was just noting that so many of the top players seems to be saying their '20 season is now over and that they'll be back in '21. Maybe not Halep, though, I guess. Being a Premier should help. And, really, just a Czech-loaded field in Ostrava would be high-level.

Maybe Gauff will try to defend Linz?

Quiz: Okay, I "cheated" a little and had to look at who won the girls slams in those years, so I guess this doesn't "count." 2010 was overloaded with "regular" tour champs, but that lack of a slam is telling.

2018 (Gauff, Swiatek, Wang Xiyu, Liang) and 2017 (Anisimova, Kostyuk, Osuigue, Liu) look like good years, with 2016 (Lapko, Masarova, Potapova, Day) less so. 2019 (Tauson, Fernandez, Snigur, Osorio S.) is already looking promising.
