=DAY 6 NOTES=
.@darren_cahill: Thrill seeker@Simona_Halep: Not so much...#ESPNTennis pic.twitter.com/sLrenvo4ek
— ESPNTennis (@ESPNTennis) September 3, 2016
Yet, there was performing another death-defying walk on the edge of oblivion in broad daylight. First off, though, let's just remember that Si-mo-na -- or maybe it was "Whew!-mo-na" -- ultimately returned safely from her mid-day stroll.
Simona Survives
— ESPNTennis (@ESPNTennis) September 3, 2016
The No.5 seed escapes defeat, overcoming Babos 6-1 2-6 6-4 to book a spot in R16. #USOpen pic.twitter.com/NKqRVvmQh7
But it wasn't easy.
After racing to a 3-0 lead and taking the 1st set 6-1 over the big-hitting Timea Babos, Simona Halep soon found herself down a break in the 2nd. Cue Halep talking to herself, the "arguments" with coach Darren Cahill in the stands and the shedding of the lack-of-composure traits she talked about after her 2nd Round win two days ago. As Babos lifted her game while Halep's sunk of her own accord, the entire momentum of the match shifted in the Hungarian's favor. Almost TOO far. Babos took the 2nd set 6-2, then grabbed an early break in the 3rd. She led 3-1.
For the first time this #usopen, Simona #Halep will have to play three sets. @TimeaBabos takes the second set, 6-2. pic.twitter.com/JYGMBR77i5
— US Open Tennis (@usopen) September 3, 2016
Then the match turned into a battle between the games and wills of the two women, but also to see which one would give away enough -- because of what was happening on the INSIDE -- that it ultimately might cause them to lose the match.
Fighting to get back on serve, Halep's defense extended a point until Babos missed on an overhead to give the Romanian a 15/30 lead in game #6. Then a Babos forehand error gave her a BP. The Hungarian's own good defense extended a rally one point later, but she was the one whose error ended it. Halep knotted things at 3-3, then held a game later (helped greatly by Babos just missing on a second serve return that she blasted down the line at 30/30).
Babos took a 30/love lead on serve in game #8, but Halep's successful (and perfect) drop shot from the baseline preceded a Babos double-fault. Then she flew a forehand on a short ball to give Halep a BP for a chance to serve out the match. Babos saved it, as well as two more BP in the game as she held in a nine-minute game to tie the score at 4-4
But Halep wasn't finished walking on the Cliffs' edge.
She fell behind 15/40 in game #9. With her serve looking shaky, the Romanian was saved by Babos' game hitting a bad patch. Three consecutive errors (including one off a 65-mph Halep second serve) gave the #5 seed a game point, then another forehand fired into the net by the #31-seed closed out a hold that gave Halep a 5-4 lead in the set. With the Round of 16 within reach, though, Halep found herself down 40/15 on Babos' serve a game later. She threw her racket into the court, cracking it and earning a code violation (as well as avoiding getting knocked out cold by it on the rebound).
So Halep does this and wins the final four points to advance to week two. Good news for racquet tossers. pic.twitter.com/38Wk4gDFUG
— TennisNow (@Tennis_Now) September 3, 2016
But as was the case in the 2nd Round when she abused another poor racket, it seemed to work like a charm. Halep never lost a point with her new "lucky" weapon of choice. Four straight points went her way, including a Babos error that gave her a MP. Then Babos double-faulted to end the match. Halep's 6-1/2-6/6-4 win sends her to her second straight U.S. Open Round of 16, and her third in the last four years.
Whew!
Yeah, what she said.
Simona Halep needed 3 sets to down Timea Babos 6-1 2-6 6-4 and reach #USOpen round of 16 pic.twitter.com/ry38WABx1M
— We Are Tennis (@WeAreTennis) September 3, 2016
Ummm... knew it all along.
(Walk away. Nothing to see here.)
...Serena Williams followed Halep on Ashe Stadium, but had far less trouble than the Romanian in a 6-2/6-1 win over Johanna Larsson. The victory gives her 307 match wins in her slam career, breaking the tie with Martina Navratilova for the women's all-time lead and bringing her even with Roger Federer for the overall Open era mark. But, of course, it was the #1-seed's fashion that lingers in the mind.

It's sort of mash-up of something a cheerleader, a pre-teen beauty pageant contestant and a circus clown might wear. Unfortunately. Well, I guess it's just further proof that she is, indeed, human.
Although, without the sleeves, I could maybe live with it... and maybe even like it on a REALLY sunny day.
...in other 3rd Round action on Saturday, Yaroslava Shvedoda defeated Zhang Shuai to reach the Round of 16 at a second straight major (she's done it before -- in Paris and London in 2012), but for the first time in her career at the U.S. Open. Carla Suarez-Navarro, on her 28th birthday, made it four-for-four in 2016 Round of 16's at the slams by taking out Elena Vesnina. CSN is one of four women to reach this stage at all four majors this season. Herself, Serena, Madison Keys and...
Aga Radwanska.
The Pole thus matches her career-best U.S. Open (her fifth such result at Flushing Meadows) with a 2 & 3 win over Caroline Garcia. She'll face a familiar face in 18-year old Ana Konjuh, who reached her first career slam Round of 16 via a three-set victory over Varvara Lepchenko.
.@AnaKonjuh with the win! She takes down Lepchenko 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to make her way to the second week of the #usopen. pic.twitter.com/dU87HtpHCp

You may remember the last time Aga and Ana met on a major stage. It was quite the occasion, as the Croat held three MP vs. Radwanska, then stepped on a ball and, well... things didn't turn out too well after that.

...in the final women's match to be completed in the day session, Karolina Pliskova continued her shhhh-don't-spook-the-Czech-Maiden path through this slam's draw. A major that, it can now be said, that is now officially THE BEST of her career. Pliskova simply went about her business in her 3rd Rounder vs. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the Russian against whom she came in sporting a 3-0 head-to-head advantage.
Pliskova jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st, wavered for a moment by double-faulting on BP to hand over her first break of the match to the Hordette and tighten things at 4-2, but then immediately broke back and served out the set. The 2nd set, though, threatened to put the Cincinnati champ's big stage nerves to the test. Her performance threw up a few minor red flags, but nothing to worry TOO much about at this point. In game #7, she had BP chances on Pavlyuchenkova's serve to give herself a chance to serve out the match. But she failed to convert, then soon after went down love/40 on serve at 4-3. Pavlyuchenkova crushed a second serve return winner to get things back to even at 4-4. But rather than hand over the momentum, Pliskova got the break back a game later and DID have a chance to serve out the match, after all. She missed a forehand and fell down BP but, finally, on her second MP closed things out with a big serve (naturally... though it IS something her twin sister Kateryna has difficulty doing when it matters most) to win 6-2/6-4 and become one of dozens of Czechs to have reached a slam Round of 16, but the VERY FIRST Pliskova to do it (in her eighteenth MD appearance in a major).
Eight match winning streak ??

First Grand Slam R16 appearance ??@KaPliskova is breaking new ground at the #usopen. pic.twitter.com/g6EOhLtqne
Not that there isn't still QUITE a bit more baggage she has to unload to be FULLY free of her past.
At #11, Pliskova had been highest ranked never to reach a Slam R16. She's still highest ranked never to reach a Slam QF or Slam SF. #USOpen
— Ben Rothenberg (@BenRothenberg) September 3, 2016
The losses by Vesnina and Pavlyuchenkova mean that no Russians reached the Round of 16 at this slam. It's just the 2nd time in the last sixty-five majors (beginning with the 2000 U.S. Open) that that's happened. The only other time during the stretch was at Wimbledon in 2013, the year "The Radwanskian Massacre" took out so many top players on Day 3.
Of course, as far as the Czech is concerned, her quiet path will now get a bit nosier.
Her next opponent: Venus Ebony Starr Williams.
Vintage #Venus! The two-time champ takes the first set 6-1 in just 34 minutes. #usopen pic.twitter.com/bTNcQS57ZO
— US Open Tennis (@usopen) September 4, 2016
At 36, nineteen years after her U.S. Open debut in 1997, Venus has now reached the Round of 16 at six of the last eight majors.
...meanwhile, not long after getting a win with Martina Hingis in doubles, CoCo Vandeweghe came back later in the evening and took out Hingis & Leander Paes (the defending MX champs) with Rajeev Ram by her side in a 13-11 3rd set tie-break (on their fourth MP, after Hingis/Paes had led 8-4). Hmmm, I'd suggest Vandeweghe now go out and win the WD title with Martina because, if that doesn't happen, this might be enough to make their new partnership a brief one if there's not something else to, you know, make it worth the effort.
I'm just sayin'.

@jon_wertheim Real sportsman. Best ever reminder what sports is about?????
— hannu pelttari (@HannuPe) September 1, 2016
So, apparently, a "real sportsman" is an athlete who wastes their great talent, fails to prepare themselves for the rigor of the highest level of their sport, and often acts in a reckless, unprofessional way while playing said sport, leading to unnecessary injuries, pathetic exits and eye-rolling nose-dives (literally, and figuratively) when a yellow-bricked path to success is seemingly placed before them at big events.
And, yes, I've looked at his draw for this Open, too. I'd say he could very well reach the semifinals, depending on Rafa's form the next two rounds. But then I realize who I'm talking about, and figure he'll find a way to avoid such an it's-about-time fate.

2 Comments:
Stat of the Day-18- The number of slams it took Pliskova to reach the round of 16.
Looking back at the last 10 years, there have been 10 Czech women to reach the round of 16, listed will be how many main draws it took to get there the first time.
Smitkova-1st
Kvitova-1st
Cetkovska-3rd
Vaidisova-5th
Hlavackova-7th
Safarova-7th
Pliskova-18
Zakopalova-28th
Strycova-33rd
Benesova-34th
Quick notes-Smitkova not only did it in her first one, but came through qualies. Vaidisova reached R16 9 of 20 slams. And Hlavackova? Has made MD in doubles 34 times, but only 12 in singles. And got rewarded by having to play Serena. And lost 6-0, 6-0.
And, of course, Pliskova was the only one to get the order "mixed up" and reach the Top 10 THEN a Round of 16. Those crazy Czechs... can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em. :)
