AO.Q - The Czechs Crush Qualifying

A look back at the Australian Open qualifying rounds...

*TOP Q-PLAYERS*

1. Katherine Sebov, CAN (24, #191) ...it takes a good Canadian to keep ahead of the army of teenaged Czech racket wielders, and Sebov manages to do so on this list because she *also* took out one of them, knocking off #2-seeded Adelaide 1 finalist Linda Noskova (ranked #56, but not early enough to avoid having to qualify in Melbourne) in the opening round. She followed up with a win over Aussie Priscilla Hon and #20 Simona Waltert to reach her maiden slam MD.

===============================================

2. Sara Bejlek, CZE (16, #175) ...while the player on the leading edge of the swarming Crush of Czechs seems to change every few months -- from one Fruhvirtova to another, to Noskova or any number of others -- Bejlek might *ultimately* rise to the top. The 16-year old's second consecutive slam qualifying run saw her take out top-seeded Alycia Parks in three sets in the second round. Bejlek will turn 17 two days after the end of the Australian Open. Time well tell what happens between now and then, but it worth noting that she'll face countrywoman Barbora Krejcikova in the 1st Round.

===============================================
3. Brenda Fruhvirtova, CZE (15, #135) ...the Czech teen set in the Melbourne MD is two qualifiers strong and consists of three Crushers in total (w/ with Brenda's older sister Linda an automatic MD entry, even with Noskova's Q1 defeat). They're the three youngest participants in the women's draw. Brenda F. is *the* youngest, and makes her slam MD debut after twice rallying from behind in qualifying. Fruhvirtova trailed Daria Snigur 7-5/5-1, and was down a break twice in the 3rd in her second match, then came from a set back in her third outing to take down Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.

Was it really less than two years ago that Bejlek and Fruhvirtova led the Czechs to the *Junior* BJK Cup title? Sure it was... because they're *still* young enough to contend for the AO girls' title *this* year.
===============================================
4. Cristina Bucsa, ESP (25, #102) ...maybe 2023 will finally allow Bucsa to play in a slam MD *without* having to go through qualifying, because she's got *that* little trick fine tuned to the nth degree. The Spaniard's successful Q-run in Melbourne is her second straight at the AO, second straight in a major and her fourth three-win journey in the last five slams, accounting for all of her career major MD appearances (she got her lone win last year in NY over Kaja Juvan).

This week, as the #4 seed, Bucsa didn't lose a set, taking out Ashlyn Krueger and Nao Hibino (saving 12 SP in the 1st vs. the latter) to finish things off. Afterward, she was in a very generous mood...

===============================================
5. CoCo Vandeweghe, USA (31, #140) ...most of Vandeweghe's time since her glorious, two-slam SF (and a QF) season in '17 has been occupied with a series of injury-and-recovery episodes. She's gone just 2-10 in slam MD -- missing six majors altogether, while also three times failing to get out of qualifying -- since going 14-4 that season. She'll return to the MD in Melbourne for the first time since '20 (her last win came in the '17 QF vs. Muguruza) after stringing together wins over Aussie Arina Rodionova, '22 AO girls' champ Petra Marcinko and Lily Miyazaki (winning a 10-1 MTB), and will play in a third straight major MD (Wimbledon LL + U.S. Open WC) for the first time since 2018.

===============================================

*OTHER AO QUALIFIERS*

Clara Burel, FRA (21/#131) - the Pastry's second straight slam Q. She staged a comeback from 7-6/4-0 vs. Carol Zhao in the second round.

Arianne Hartono, NED (26/#237) - a year after qualifying to reach her maiden slam MD, the former NCAA champ (2018) does the deed again, knocking out two seeds (#19 In-Albon, #14 Pigossi) and winning a MTB vs. Aiava

Selena Janicijevic, FRA (20/#185) - wins over #13 Ruse and #26 Burrage get Janicijevic into a slam MD for the first time since 2019. I've been saying since (at least) last summer that the Pastry would be back in the slam mix (at least as a WC) by this year's RG, so now the question is whether she might actually be able to rise quickly enough that a free pass from the FFT won't be necessary come May.

Polina Kudermetova, RUS (19/#182) - hail the rise of the younger Kudermetova, as Veronika's little sister wins her way into her maiden slam MD with wins over Gasanova, #30 Boulter (Week 1 Canberra challenger champ) and Muhammad

Eva Lys, GER (21/#127) - the young German turned a corner in the fall with a $60K title and $100K final, and now she's into her first slam MD, taking out former AO junior champ VJK in the final round

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, SVK (28/#100) - at #3, AKS was the highest women's Q-seed to reach the MD, sweeping all six sets and earning her spot with a Q3 win over Elli Mandlik

Oksana Selekhmeteva, RUS (19/#179) - the teen Hordette qualifies for her second slam ('22 RG) in less than a year, defeating Diatchenko, #24 Ann Li and S.Chang

Diana Shnaider, RUS (18/#105) - the N.C. State tennis recruit's college career might be over before it even starts, as she's followed up her late '22 surge -- 125 title, $60K final, 2 125 & $100K QF and a 23-7 finish -- with her slam MD debut

Lucrezia Stefanini, ITA (24/#141) - they're no Crush of Czechs, but the wave of Italians -- most in their early 20s -- continues to get deeper and deeper. Stefanini showed signs of a spark as '22 progressed, and here she is in her maiden slam draw after wins over Auckland finalist Rebeka Masarova and Sachia Vickery (ret.).

Lesia Tsurenko, UKR (33/#134) - the veteran Ukrainian charges into her 38th career slam MD, defeating #9-seed Leolia Jeanjean in the final round to qualify at a second straight AO. Tsurenko dropped just 12 games in three matches.

Katie Volynets, USA (21/#115) - a week and a half after her loss to Venus Williams in Auckland, Volynets fought through a back-and-forth Q2 match vs. Nigina Abduraimova, then outlasted Kristina Mladenovic in the Bannerette's third consecutive three-setter to qualify for a second straight year in Melbourne

*AO WILD CARDS*

* - slam MD debut
-
NOTE: Gadecki finally makes her slam debut after missing out on a '22 AO WC due to refusing Covid vaccination. Ash Barty is set to "mentor" her, perhaps giving the expectant mom some early practice when it comes to dealing with youthful stubbornness.

*AO - MD PROTECTED RANKING*

Kristina Kucova, SVK (32)
Karolina Muchova, CZE (26)

AO Q1 - Katherine Sebov def. #2 Linda Noskova 4-6/6-3/6-4
AO Q2 - Sara Bejlek def. #1 Alycia Parks 5-7/6-4/6-2
...on a whim, the Tennis Gods will always seek to occasionally treat players as if they're balls of yarn while They are a herd of felines.
===============================================
AO Q2 - #27 Brenda Fruhvirtova def. Daria Snigur 5-7/7-6(3)/6-3
...in her previous major, Snigur upset Simona Halep. Here she saw the 15-year old Czech rally from 7-5/5-1 down, and after having trailed by a break twice early in the 3rd set.
===============================================
AO Q2 - #17 Clara Burel def. Carol Zhao 6-7(4)/6-4/7-6(10-2)
...the Pastry trailed 7-6/4-0 before reeling off six straight games, then won a deciding MTB after having fallen behind 3-1 in the final set.
===============================================
AO Q2 - #11 Katie Volynets def. Nigina Abdurimova 6-1/4-6/7-6(10-7)
...Volynets lost a 6-1/4-2 lead, then led 5-2 in the 3rd (w/ 2 MP at 5-3) before seeing the Uzbeki knot the set at 5-5. The Bannerette failed to convert 3 BP in game #10, but went on to the win the MTB.
===============================================
AO Q1 - Misaki Doi def. Alex Eala 4-6/7-6(1)/6-3
...'22 U.S. Open girls' champ Eala led 6-4/5-2 and twice served for a straight sets win, but the veteran Japanese player's experience had prevailed by the end of the match.
===============================================
AO Q1 - #9 Leolia Jeanjean def. Irina Bara 7-6(5)/1-6/7-6(10-7)
...Jeanjean ultimately fell (to Tsurenko) in the final round, but she opened her week by winning despite trailing Bara 5-1 in the 3rd set. Bara served for the match three times, holding two MP at 5-4, 40/15.

Zheng, Badosa and Kudermetova are all injured. I'm hoping for the best for all three--I'd like to see them go deep into the draw--but it may not work out for them.
