She will take on the winner of Davis/Blinkova. pic.twitter.com/MC5uJ1Qey7
The Italian will crack the Top 50 in the pre-AO rankings, rising from #67. Blinkova climbed back into the Top 100 last season, reaching her first singles finals since '19 and claiming her maiden tour title in Cluj. She qualified in Hobart, then knocked off Lucia Bronzetti, Marie Bouzkova and Yulia Putintseva to reach the SF (loss vs. Davis). She'll jump to #60, just off her career high of #54.
Superb display! Anna Blinkova surges to a high-quality 6-3, 6-4 win over Yulia Putintseva to reach the semifinals at the Hobart International.

The Melbourne Open Super Series event takes place this week, with de Groot expected to bring her 74-match winning streak into 2023. De Groot is the defending champ (def. Kamiji in the '22 final), but lost in finals vs. Kamiji in 2019 and '21 (the latter being the Dutch star's most recent defeat in singles).

When we found out a few months ago that Trump stole a bunch of classified documents and took em down to Mar-a-Lago, his supporters yelled at me & said Trump did nothing wrong. But now these same people are yelling at me today & accusing Biden of doing something really wrong. Huh?
— Joe Walsh (@WalshFreedom) January 11, 2023
In case you forgot, the reason for the Mar-A-Lago raid was NOT because #Trump had classified documents, it was because after being served a subpoena, Trump's lawyers provided a sworn certification that all government records had been returned. They lied and 33 boxes were seized.

??: Your daily reminder that you don't have to pretend that this stuff with Biden has any relationship or comparability or significance to Trump's criminal conduct at Mar-a-Lago. https://t.co/WtQ0umn0Yx

Curious if Mladenovic stays in the doubles draw. Seemed to be having heat issues again in qualifying.
It would be too mean to scare you, so Zheng Saisai is out, Mandlik in.
Will Australia be your Nation of Lost Souls? Will have something on that tomorrow barring a huge upset.
Stefani is high on that recent doubles list for missing a year.
Stat of the Week- 16- ATP/WCT titles for Jurgen Fassbender.
Fassbender does have one other title.
With all of the talk of how United Cup is the first mixed team event for points, we have had other mixed events in which mixed doubles were played. One of those was Johannesburg in 1973.
Johannesburg, an event in which Indigenous Goolagong and Arthur Ashe were welcomed, but the crowds were segregated.
Goolagong, having been the first non white person to have played the event in 1971, came back after winning singles in 72. She lost the singles final in 1973, winning mixed with Fassbender.
1973 was a banner year for Fassbender. He reached 2 of his 3 slam SF that season, doing so at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. His career high singles rank was the very first ATP ranking(31) that same year. Doubles high was 22 in 1976.
Quiz Time!
Evonne Goolagong has 6(unofficial) mixed doubles titles. Which of these did she win? Multiple answers accepted.
A.French Open
B.Wimbledon
C.New Zealand Open
D.World Couples Championships
Interlude- Disaster Girl.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_y88KAPKW0
Answer!
I don't remember half of this, but it is interesting.
(D)World Couples Championships is correct. Unlike the others on this list, this was a doubles only event won by Goolagong and Stan Smith in 1980. It may have been home cooking, as the event was held in Hilton Head, where they both lived.
They defeated the team of Dick Stockton/Andrea Jaeger in the final.
Between 1974-84, this was one of 3 different events, the others being World Mixed Doubles and International Mixed Doubles that ran for a short time.
(A)French Open is correct as fellow Aussie Kim Warwick helped win this title in 1972. Much more of a doubles star with 26 titles, he did reach the Australian Open singles final in 1980.
(C)New Zealand Open is correct. Another 1973 mixed event, as was Bournemouth, Ross Case was the lucky winner here.
That leaves (B)Wimbledon. That was a loss as Goolagong/Warwick tried to win the Channel Slam, only to come up short against Casals/Nastase.
There are other events, mostly in 1970 & 71 that were mixed, the majority in Great Britain and Australia.
You know, that's not a bad Poor Souls idea. One has never been wrapped up *before* the start of play, but these *are* unusual circumstances.
Quiz: had to go with the Couples event (one of those "why else would it be listed...?" things), and threw in the two slams. So... almost.
Disaster Girl: the brother could have been a whole different meme on his own.
Speaking of disasters... did you see the video of the passenger in Nepal filming live to Facebook as the plane crashed? Yeeks.
I've never seen so much video of a plane crash: from a doomed passenger inside, from someone on the ground when the plane turned sideways, from someone who filmed the plane falling out of the sky and exploding in a gorge.
